DISTRICT NEWS.

PATERANGI NEWS. There Hvas a large and representative gathering of farmers at a meeting held on Wednesday evening last under the auspices of .the Paterangi branch of the Farmers’ Union, whev., Mr Burton, Government veterinary surgeon, delivered a lecture on the cow in health and disease. Mr W. G. Macky took the chair, and 'briefly introduced the lecturer. Mr Burton, who was well received, dealt at some length with the principal points of a dairy cow, and also in an interesting way described the symptoms of contagious mammitis. foot rot, abortion, and other diseases. His talk was not by any means in the nature of a lecture and throughout was attentively listened to. Such gatherings as these are much appreciated by farmers in this rich dairying district, all of whom take a keen interest in all farming matters, especially in dairying. There was an enjoyable euchre party held at the Paterangi Hall on Thursday evening, when a number of tables were occupied and a pleasant evening spent. Miss Anderson secured the first prize for ladies, and Mr J. Shaw the first gentleman’s trophy. Miss Reid was fortunate in winning the booby prize, and Mr F. Dodd, the gent’s booby prize. Afterwards dancing was entered into with zest, when Mr J. Burrows capably acted as M.C., and music Was supplied by Miss Anderson and Mrs. W. G. Macky. A sumptuous supper supplied by the ladies added to the pleasure of the gathering.
