OTOROHANGA NEWS.

GENERAL ITEMS. Reports of various meetings of ratepayers, etc., are unavoidably held over over till next issue owing to pressure on our space. Mr J. A. Ormsby has a notice in this issue intimating that the Otorohanga Butchery will be closed next Monday (Labour Day). We have authority for stating that Mr B. Budden will be a candidate for County honours at the forthcoming election. Mr Budden will stand for the Otorohanga riding. The town hall committee of the Town Board has decided to re-draft the schedule of. charges for hire of the hall, intending to discriminate more between social gatherings and those of public and commercial importance. The scale of fees chargeable to theatrical companies is also Jo be adjusted, and conditions of lease laid down, so as to protect the public from being exploited, as occurred recently, when no one was admitted till the hall was practically filled at the highest-priced seats. Occasion was taken by Mr Trott at the meeting of Kio Kio ratepayers yesterday to bring forward the matter of an improved rural postal service from Otorohanga. He especially emphasised the necessity of having a triweekly service in lieu of a bi-weekly one to outlying districts like Maihiihi and Rangiatea. Those present entered into the spirit o ft-he suggestion, and resolved that Messrs Trott, Lurman, and Murphy he a committee to make inquiries and work to the end of persuading the Postal Department to give the enhanced facilities suggested as far as postal communication is concerned.

It is to be hoped that the meeting called for this evening in connection with the establishment of an Oddfellows’ Lodge in Otorohanga will be well attended, The object is a laudable one. and deserves, support. It is understood taht the Postal Department contemplates erecting a penny-in-the-islot telephone in a prominent position in the town. This will be a great convenience to the Otorohanga public, and will obviate the nuisance that has obtained «m regard to the indiscriminat use of private telephones. The owners of these latter say nothing when someone conies in and asks, “ May I use your telephone?” in a nice and mincing way, but one should hear the critical remarks when the bi-weekly hill arrives from the post office.
