OHAUPO NEWS.

CONCERT AM) SOCIAL.

Under the auspices of Christ Church, Oliaupo. a concert and social was held in Turnwald’s hall on Tuesday evening last, when there \vas a large and appreciative audience. Among the visitors present were the Rev. A. M. and Mrs Niblock (Te Awa»nutu) and Mr H. Y. Collins An excellent programme of vocal and instrumental and other items was presented, while a full orchestra was in attendance and contributed much to ■the enjoyment of the evening. Those representing the orchestra were Mr Watson (pianoforte), the Misses Esme and Jean Watson (violins). Mr Watson (violin). Mr H. Y. Collins (bass), :Mr C. North (clarionet), Mr Fawcett (flute), and Mrs Burrell (’cello). The orchestra played a march and other -selections with much expression. Songs were contributed by Miss Turnwald, Rev. T. Turner (comic songs), and Mr Minchell, while the Rev. C. Turner, who has quite a reputation as an entertainer with “ Claude,” delighted everyone. Mr Fawcett amused all with his humorous anecdotes,' and a humorous dialogue by Master Courtenay and Miss Jean Watson was much appreciated. Rev. C. Turner took the solos in Scott’s choruses, assisted by Mrs Turner, Mrs Burrell, Miss Turnwald, Miss Pohlen, and the Misses Watson. In a trio, “ The Tliree Old Maids of Lee,” the Misses Watson and Donaldson pleasingly sang. A hearty vote of thanks for those who had in any way assisted was passed. Altogether the concert was a success.

PERSONAL.

Mr and Mrs W. Mellor and family, formerly farming at Eltham (Taranaki). have arrived in Ohaupo, and will take up their abode at Kaipaki. ■Mr Mellor has purchased Mr J. W. Johnson’s farm at Kaipaki. Mr A. S. Revell, who until lately was farming at Timaru. having purchased Mr R. Cobbe’s. farm, known as “ Arden,” at Kaipaki, has, with his family, taken up his residence at “ Arden.” The Kaipaki settlers welcome these new-comers to the district. and trust that their future will be a prosperous and happy one.

GENERAL ITEMS.

Commenting on the building now being demolished on the main road at Ohaupo, the site of which was recently acquired for the purpose of the new memorial town hall, it is interesting to note that this formed part of the store erected by the late Mr J. T. Edwards about forty years ago, and is one of the oldest buildings in the town. For many years a general store business was carried on there by the late Mr Edwards, and several prosperous farmers to-day can recall business transactions at the store when life with them was a greater struggle than at present. Although there have not been many changes ( in Ohaupo during the past few years there is likely to be more progress in the future.

Mr A. E. Miles, butcher, of Ohaupo, -has just purchased from Mr A. Turnwald the shop and premises on the ■main road in his (Mr Miles’) occupation. These buildings also include ■the office occupied by the Ohaupo Town Board.

There are other likely changes impending, and several inquiries’ have lately been made for properties in the district.

At the Ohaupo stock sale on Tuesday next the Farmers’ Co-operative Auctioneering Company will offer an •acetylene gas plant and 200 feet of 'piping. Upward of 100 head of cattle will he offered at the Ohaupo stock sale by 'the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company in that firm’s ■Ohaupo yards on Tuesday next. On ■the following day about 400 dairy cows' and heifers will be auctioned by the same firm. A hope is expressed that more stock sales will be held in Ohaupo. The concert held on Tuesday evening in Turnwald’s hall (kindly lent for the occasion) was a great success.

Although polling in Ohaupo in connection with the poll for the loan of '£120,000 under the scheme of the Te Awamutu Electric Power Board was not heavy it is encouraging to know ■that Ohaupo settlers were in favour of the proposal. This is an indication that the people of Ohaupo are only •too anxious to take their share in' any progressive movements for the advancement of the district.
