NO CONFIDENCE.
THE farce staged by the Labour faction in the House of Representatives was a poor, thing of its kind. The want-of-confidence motion was not taken seriously even by its ostensible supporters. At a time when the country has so much need of earnest and unremitting service from its legislators this class of clumsy political clowning is particularly unedifying, and the only redeeming feature of the affair was the celerity with which it was brought to a close. While some Liberals voted for the motion, the Leader of the Opposition and several members of his party refused, to their credit, to follow at Labour’s heels in such a sorry and resultless parade. As matters stand one section of the Liberal party is hob-nobbing with extreme Labour while the other stands aloof. It is a state of affairs that will bear elucidation. The incident m any case makes it clearer than ever that the one essential line 'to be drawn is between those who want work and those who are prepared in venting their party feeling to turn the proceedings of Parliament into a cheap burlesque.
