OTOROHANGA NEWS.
GENERAL ITEMS.
There were no less than four tenders received for the providing of metal for the main streets of Otorohanga, and that of Messrs Baxter and Bagnall was the one accepted. Immediately the river is sufficiently low for the obtaining of metal we shall see this important work carried out. A business that has advanced considerably with the growth of Otorohanga is that of Mr F. Plier, the wellknown general carrier, who has an advertisement in this issue calling attention to the fact that he is ever ready to undertake general work, and particularly the supply of coal. The Otorohanga senior football team will play Pio Pio seniors at Otorohanga on Saturday next. This should be an interesting match, as on its result depends Otorohanga’s chance of winning the championship. FOOTBALL. The senior match between Mangapeehi and Otorohanga resulted on Saturday in a win for the latter by eight points to nil. There was a large number of interested spectators to watch the game. Mangapeehi, winning the toss, elected to play with the sun at their back, and at the commencement there was little to choose between the teams, both sides evincing great eagerness. After a lot of to and fro play the visitors kept operations confined to mid-field, from where the Otorohanga backs got possession, and from a fine passing run by Birchall, Taylor, and Murphy, the ball was sent to the three-quarter Wharenui, who got over the line. The - kick at goal by B. Clarke was successful. Otorohanga 5, Mangapeehi 0. The play was very even to the halftime whistle. In the second spell Otorohanga opened with some fast play, and. taking possession endangered the opposing team’s line several times, and Mangapeehi had to force down. The last quarter showed both teams pretty well spent, but the Otorohanga forwards made things busy, and kept play on their opponents’ line, where B. Clarke secured the ball, and managed to get over, but the attempt to convert failed. Shortly after this the whistle sounded, and the game ended with the scores: Otorohanga 8, Mangapeehi 0. Mr Gallaugher was referee.
OTEWA. A quiet wedding was solemnised by the Rev. J. D. McFarlane on Wednesday, 23rd June, at “ Fernstead,” the residence of Mr James Still, of Otewa, when Charles W. H., the eldest son of Mr C. Chilcott, of Otorohanga, was married to Kathleen S. G., only daughter of Mr James Still. The bride, who was given away by her father, wore a neat grey tailor-made costume, and was attended by Miss Agnes McFarlane, who was also attired in grey. Mr H. Dash acted as best man. After the ceremony, the guests sat down to luncheon, when the usual toasts were honoured. The happy couple left by motor for Te Kuiti, en route to Auckland, where the honeymoon will be spent. Among the many presents to the young couple, was one very much appreciated by the bride, from the teachers and pupils of the Otewa School.
