TE AWAMUTU Y. REWATU.
A WIN FOR THE LOCAL TEAM
The football season in Te Awamutu opened at Bockett's paddock on Sat; urday, when Te Awamutu met and defeated Rewatu by 24 points to 0, after a good game. The ground was in good condition. Details of the play are as follow: From the kick off Te Awamutu immediately took up the attack, the Rewatu defence holding them off the scoring lines for a considerable time. Griffith, receiving the ball, dropped a fine goal for Te Awamutu. Te Awamutu 4 Rewatu •. 0 From the kick out McDermott put in a nice long run, dodging past and jumping over many of his opponents. Kite relieved with a good kick, Andrew taking a mark right in front of the goal. Griffith failed to ' put the ball over the bar. Kite came away with a great rush, brushing off the Te Awamutu defence in good style, and he looked certain to score, but Ralph Smith, with a very fast run, overtook him and brought him down not far from the line. The play was very evenly divided in the first quarter.
In the second spell Sutton picked up the ball and" passed to Burchell. Kite put the latter player out on the corner post, and from a scrum Burchell received the ball and passed to Sutton. He handled the ball well and scored a really good try. Smith took the kick, but failed to add the major points. Te Awamutu 7 Rewatu 0 In the third quarter of the game Te Awamutu played more scientifically, their forwards working really well, led by Mackay. Moisley, and Christie. Rewatu were having a very hot time, Kite being kept very busy clearing his line. Griffith received possession of the ball and passed to McDermott, to Burchell, to Sutton, to Andrew, to Taylor, the latter ending the best passing bout of the day with a try. Taylor took the kick, but failed to convert. Te Awamutu 10 Rewatu 0 Mick'el and Parunga for Rewatu came away with a great rush, and made things look bad for Te Awamutu. Sutton, however, came to the rescue, carrying the ball well up the field to transport it to R. Smith, who scored. Te Awamutu 13 Rewatu 0 ■ Rewatu came away with a wild rush. * Langmuir relieved with a strong kick, Burchell scoring from a pass by Sutton. Te Awamutu 16 Rewatu 0 In the final spell the Te Awamutu forwards, led by Quin and Christie, put in some good footwork, the latter player scoring right between the posts. Burchell took the kick, and piloted the ball over the bar. Te Awamutu 21 Rewatu 0 The hard game began to show on Rewatu, but they fought on gamely, making great attempts to cross the Te Awamutu line. Sutton made a nice opening, drawing the Rewatu defence, to his side of the field, and then putting in a strong cross kick. R. Smith followed up and touched down, thus making the final score: Te Awamutu 24 Rewatu 0 Mr S. H. West was referee and controlled the game in an efficient manner. At half time .refreshments were provided for the players by Mr J. T. Lees.

THE FIXTURES OF THE SEASON. Owing to, the withdrawal of Pukeatua from the competition the redraw for the Waipa Rugby Union matches is:— May 22—Pirongia v. Rewatu; Kihikihi v. Ohaupo; Te Awamutu v. Huia. May 29—Pirongia v. Huia—Ohaupo v. Te Awamutu; Kihikihi v. Rewatu. June 5 Ohaupo v. Pirongia; Te Awamutu v. Kihikihi; Rewatu v. Huia. June 12—Kihikihi v. Huia; Rewatu v. Ohaupo; Pirongia v. Te Awamutu.
OHAUI'O V. OTOROHANGA.
The Otorohanga Football team visited Ohaupo on Saturday for the purpose of playing the first of the sea son's matches there. The weather was good and the ground in tip-top playing order. Play was fast, and a good exhibition of the game was given, but the visiting forwards exhibited the greater dash, and their backs were a superior combination. The result was a win for Otorohanga by six points to nil. The winners showed the advantage of practice, but it is only a question of time when Ohaupo, which possesses all the material of a good team, will prove a stumbling block for many.
Mr L. Macky refereed Saturday's match, with satisfaction to everybody. Now that Mr G. Urquhart, the old experienced Waipa "representative player has taken over the secretaryship of the local club, there will he a revival of dash in the play. Next Saturday Ohaupo is to meet Pukeatua.
HUIA V. OHAUPO.
T*he match between the Huia (Otorohanag) team and Ohaupo, under the jurisdiction of the Waipa Rugby Union, took place at the latter township on Saturday last. The ground proved rough, and, owing to it being an old swamp, had many dangerous characteristics, and was against good play. Ohaupo won the toss, and elected to play with sun and wind in their favour. The** Huia backs and farwards were far superior to their opponents, Tane and Puea being specially noticeable for their play/ The in Huia's favour throughout the first half, when they scored a try and Avere never seriously pressed. They also scored a try in the second spell. The match, which was played in good feeling throughout, resulted in a win for Huia with a score of 6 points to nil. The Ohaupo onlookers were very enthusiastic on behalf of .their own team, and were at times anything but complimentary to the visitors. Mr Len Mackay was referee, and ably controlled the game throughout. Huia plays Te Awamutu next Saturday, the team being as follows: Full-back, C. Dockery; three-quart-ers ,T. Wright, Thompson, am 1 Ruki; five-eighths, Carr and Kawan •: half, McAnteer; wing forward, G. V. issey; forwards, Hamona, Wipa, Tan P.iea, Keu, Morua, and D. Ormsby.
MANGAPEEHI AND OTOROHANGA.
The match between the Mangapeehi and Otorohanga teams, played under the control of the Maniapoto Rugby Union, resulted in a win for the former team by 17 points to nil. The teams were pretty evenly balanced, but events proved the visitors. Mr Mossman, of Otorohanga, was referee.
