DISTRICT NEWS.

TE KAWA.

(Own Correspond;:nt)

The crisis in regard to postal matters in Te Kawa has happily been terminated for the time being, and the post office will be carried on as before in the local store. It is a pity the Government cannot see its way clear to pay a reasonable salary for services rendered without calling upon the local residents for a subsidy. This office handles something like a .thousand letters and parcels per week, and with telephone and telegraph service makes a considerable demand upon the time of the local official. Throo shillings per day "is certainly not an adequate return for the time required even on a prewar basis, and if this represents the i average price paid to these small country offices then one can only say that it is the most poorly paid branch of the Public Service, and it is certainly time these officials woke up. Surely in these cases the "labourer is worthy of his hire."

Mr and. Mrs Robertson, who have sold their business here, will fob leaving in a few days for Auckland. Mr Robertson has also been acting a's local postmaster here, and has made many firm friends by his courteous and genial character. On Thursday last a very enjoyable and successful social evening was tendered by Host and Hostess Mr and G. Haigh in honour of Mr and Mrs Robertson. No effort was spared to make the evening a success. Dancing to first-class music was kept up to the small hours of the morning with great dash and vigour. "For they are jolly good fellows" brought this most enjoyable evening to a close, and Mr and Mrs Robertson carry with them the very best wishes of the district for their future prosperity and success.
