(The following are reports from the High Commissioner for New Zealand received at Te Awamutu since our last issue) : — Received Dec 22, 2.22 p.m. GOOD WORK BY FRENCH ARTILLERY. Paris reports state that from Lys to Aisne the Allies have taken a wood, occupying two trenches. The French heavy artillery have silenced different parts of the enemy’s artillery, overwhelming the German trenches and smashing two guns. The allies have made appreciable gains in the Champayne and Argonne. Near Beouschour Tuche a hundred yards of trenches were taken. In the Argonne and Meuse progress has been made along the whole front. On the right bank of the Meuse ground has been gained near Brabant. Received Dec 22, 8.35 p.m. BRITISH SUCCESS. Paris reports 'reports that the British troops attacked this morning and succeeded in retaking the greater part of the trenches previously lost. Before Lihous the enemy made four attacks, all of which were repulsed. Received Dec 23, 9.30 a.m.
Paris reports that a German attack was repulsed at Carency. Before Lihons the enemy made three attacks, but all were repulsed. Our artillery was efficacious on the plateau of Nouvron. Violent bayonet combats have taken place at Souain, where considerable progress has been made. Fifteen hundred yards of earthworks frontage were carried at Perthes les Hurlus. In the neighbourhood of Vauquois barbed entanglements were crossed and the enemy’s trenches captured. Received Dec 23,10 a.m. ATTACKS REPULSED. Paris reports that the enemy executed yesterday several violent counter attacks in the north-west of Ruisaliene, but all were repulsed.
Received Dec 24, 5 p.m. GERMANS’ ATTACK FAIL
Petrograd reports that in Poland the Germans secured a footing in the Lower Bzura. The Austro-German army are descending on Poland along the Front from south-west of Piotrkoff in West Vidda. Przemysl sortie was a complete failure. Paris reports that progress is being fully maintained. Received Dec 26, 3 p.m. It is officially reported that a German aeroplane dropped a bomb over Dover. ’ Two British aircraft promptly pursued the enemy, but returned after an unsuccessful chase. Received Dec 27. TRENCHES RECAPTURED. Official reports state that the fog paralyses operations on the sea at Lys, and at Lysoise we repulsed several counter attacks. At Lihons the trenches previously taken were at last retaken after a lively combat. At Perthes our artillery silenced the enemy’s batteries after bombarding the recently-taken trenches. Two violent German night attacks on the 24th and yesterday fresh particularly violent counter attacks along a fifteen hundr|cl< metres front,, completely failed. In the Upper Alsace considerable progress was made. The Russians report that the Germans were thrown back over the River Bzoura,’ suffering considerable loss. All the attacks at Bolimow failed. Along the Nida’s course and south of the Vistula the battle continues favourably. .*
GERMAN DEFENCES CAPTURED. Paris reports state that south of the Oise the French artillery smashed the enemy’s defensive works in the region of Baillyand the Plateau of Nouvron. North of Sapigneti a strong counter-attack by the enemy completely failed. North of Mesnil and east of Perthes les Hurlus, in the Aisne, the Allies now occupy the entire first line of the erienfy’s defence. In the region of Cuisv and Bois de Forges the French heavy artillery mastered the German batteries, enabling the infantry to make a marked advance. Petrograd reports state that east of Skierniwicef a German right flank attack was repulsed with heavy losses.
