SPORTING.

ALEXANDRA RACING CLUB. Beautiful weather favoured the holding of the fifty-first annual race meeting of the above club, which was held at Pirongia, on Saiurday (Boxing Day), There was a large attendance of the public, visitors being present from various parts of the Waikato. Since the last meeting of the club improvements have been made to the course.

The acceptances for the various events were good, and the racing was of an interesting nature. The secretary (Mr I. D. Parsons) carried out his duties in an able manner being well assisted by the other officials of the club. The Te Awamutu Town Band played several selections during the day, the music being very much appreciated.

Following are the results : Handicap Hurdles of 15 sovs. Mr B. Laxton’s Hammerless, 7 yrs, 9.12 ... ... ... I Mr R. Kihi’s ch. g. Siola, aged 10.7 2 Also started, Starket and Blarney Stone.

From an even start Starket showed the way to the first hurdle, where Siola refused, but negotiated the obstacle atthe second attempt. Passing the judges box the first time Starket was in the lead, closely followed by Hammerless and Blarney Stone, Siola some distance further back. This order was maintained throughout Starket winning by a length. A protest was lodged, it being alleged that the first hurdle was not taken by the placed horses. After an enquiry into the circumstances by the stewards they awarded the owner of Hammerless the stake, placing Siola second. Maiden Handicap of 7 sovs. Distance 7 furlongs. Mr R. M. Patton’s Gold Mount 8.2 ••• I Mr J. Harper’s bk. g. Black Joe 1 8.2 ... 2 Mr S. M. Douglas’s Field Marshal, 8.5 ... _ _ 3 Also started, Peria, Celebrity, Peonut,Wahine, and Grey Queen. The start was a poor one, Celebrity being left at the post. Perea at once assumed command and led along the back, closely followed by Black Joe. Coming into the straight Gold Mount came through, and overhauled the leader, and easily won by three lengths, the same distance being between the second and third horses.

Maiden Handicap Trot of 8 sovs. Distance miles. Mr J. Teddy’s Rotomanuka sen ... ... ... ... I Mr R. A. McMillan’s b.m. Roseate, 4yrs. ... ... 2 Mr D. O’Dowd’s Miss Ghoai 5 yrs _ 3 Also started, Special Cast, Miss Marjory, Lancelot and Ngapuhi. Rotomanuka soon asserted himself and took the lead, Roseate being his nearest attendant, and Miss Ghoai third. This order was maintained throughout the race. Miss Marjory and Ngapuhi did not finish. Shorts Handicap of 7 sovs. Five furlongs. Mr R. Hillmorton’s eg. Starket 9.0 1 Mr W. Robinson’s Nicomar 8.5 - 2 Mr J. P. Flynn’s Gipsy Martian 5 yrs, 8.9 3 Also started, Moet and Shandon, Grev Queen, Wahine, Sannie, and Golden Nut. Starket led throughout and won easilv by two lengths. Gipsy Martian just managed to beat Sannie for third place. Handicap trot of 10 sovs. 2 miles. Mr F. Quin’s blk. g. Teddy Me Kinney aged, scr I Mr D. O. Dowd’s Miss Ghoai 5 yrs, 29 sec. ... ••• 2 Mr N. Barnard’s b.m. Lancelot

29 sec. 3 Also started, Verbena, Pleasant Mac, and Miss Marjory. Before half the distance had been covered Teddy McKinney began to cut down the opposition and took the lead. Miss Ghoai trotted well, but could not overhaul the winner. Flying Handicap of 12 sovs. Six furlongs. Mr W. Simpson’s bg Celebrity 8.10 1 Mr A. M. Patton’s Gold Mount 8.0 ; 2 ' Mr J. Harper’s Permit 5 yrs, 8.0 3 Also started, Succession, Peria, St. Wood, Spalperion, Emansin, and Field Marshal. Succession was very troublesome at the post, lashing out in every direction. The field was sent away to an indifferent start, St. Wood and Succession being left. Celebrity was soon in front, and maintained the lead, winning easily.
