TE AWAMUTU BOROUGH.

PROPOSALS HEARTILY APPROVED. POLLING, FOR 214, AGAINST 8. The poll to determine the constitution of the Te Awamutu Borough took place on Tuesday last, and the result was an almost unanimous decision of approval. The polling throughout the morning was very poor, and even until 3 o’clock the number of votes cast were very small indeed. From that hour onward polling was almost continuous, and the Returning Officer, Mr D. Bockett, had a busy time. Only about one-third of those entitled to vote exercised the privilege. Within half-an-hour of the closing of the booth at 6 o’clock the announcement was made as follows : For the proposal ... 214 Against the proposal 8 It would be a practical impossibility to have a unanimous ballot, but the result of the poll to constitute Te Awamutu a Borough almost stands as a record of unanimity. Summarised the figures show that only 1% out of every 100 voters at Te Awamutu opposed the issue. FUTURE STEPS. It now but remains for the Governor, by proclamation, to declare Te Awamutu a Borough, and to fix the name of the Borough. In the meantime the Town District will continue on under the control of the Town Commissioners, and the area included in the extended boundaries shall remain under the control of the Waipa County Council. The following are the clauses of the Municipal Corporations Amendment Act, which affect the position “If the result of the poll is in favour of the proposal, the Governor shall, by proclamation, constitute as a Borough, the area within which the poll was taken, and shall fix the name of the new Borough.” “The Governor may leave such new Borough undivided, and by proclamation, fix'the number.* of councillors therefor, or he may, by proclamation, divide the Borough into wards, and the number of councillors for each ward.”
