The general manager of one of the great French railway companies was leaving Paris for a holiday recently, and took an opportunity of examining the working of tire system incognito. When he arrived at the terminus the porter who took his luggage recognised him and was extremely polite and attentive. The manager slipped a couple of francs into his hand. The man touched his cap. “What! You accept tips?” exclaimed the manager. “Don’t you know it’s against the regulations'?” “Oh, yes, sir!” was the ready reply. “I never take anything from ordinary’ passengers, but as you’re a colleague I thought there was no harm. in. taking it from you!”
