The Waipa Post. PUBLISHED EVERY TUESDAY AND FRIDAY FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 27, 1914. LOCAL AND GENERAL.
The mirrors for the laughing gallery in connection with the Catholic bazaar, arrived at Te Awamutu this morning. These alone weigh seven hundredweight. Mr A. Scholes is advertised to address the electors at Hairini to-night and at Te Awamutu tomorrow night, in the Liberal interests. Both meetings will commence at 8 o'clock.
Messrs Dalgety and Co. held a horse sale at the local saleyards on Wednesday, when there was a large entry and good prices were realised.
Arrangements are now well in hand for the benefit concert and dance in aid of the Belgian Relief Fund, which will be held in the local Town Hall, on Thursday, Dec. 10th. In addition to the above the results of the elections, as they come to hand, will be shown, and light refreshments will be provided. Mr D. Donaldson who has disposed of his interest in the Golden Boot to Mr A. E. Patterson, thanks his customers for past patronage. Mr Patterson, who has taken over the business, and to whom debts contracted in the former firm may be paid, solicits a continuance of the patronage. In future the business will be known as the Patterson Shoe Store.
Mr G. W. Richards, who on hearing he had won the second prize in a Belgian Relief Art Union, valued at 45 guineas, generously donated it as a nucleus of another Art Union, was somewhat disappointed when the picture came to hand, and has decided to add two other pictures. That gentleman has also presented a valuable marble clock to further assist the fund.
Amongst the articles already received in response to the circular for donations to the Belgian Art Union, is a gold wristlet and watch from Miss Becca Lewis, Auckland, and a camera from Mr John Marshall, Te Awamutu, valued at £loand£3 respectively. Several promises of pictures have already been made. Arrangements are in hand to have the Art Union prizes exhibited. Donors are reminded that "he who gives quickly gives twice."
Owing to his inability to secure the local Town Hall at a time originally intended, Mr A. Scholes has been compelled to alter his plans, and notifies today that he will not be able to visit Korakonui and Ngaroma on Saturday as on that night he will address the electors at Te Awamutu. The local hall is booked from to-night right on to the time of the elections, and this fact alone is responsible for Mr Scholes' altered plans.
At their mart to-morrow Messrs Lawson and Swain will hold the gift auction sale on behalf of the Belgian Relief Fund as notified. Already numerous articles of every day use have been given, and the sale promises to be a very large one. Further gifts of any saleable article will be received by the auctioneers up till the time of the sale (12 o'clock noon), but it will be of assistance to them if any gifts donated are handed in at the earliest convenient moment. The worthiness of the object for which this sale is being held is fully realised by all, and that all will assist in every possible manner to assure its success may be taken for granted.
The annual meeting of the Waipa County Council took place at Ohaupo on Wednesday. Mr R. Fisher was unanimously appointed chairman and Mr Chas. Bowden re-appointed clerk to the Council. Eulogistic reference was made to the thorough manner in which Mr Bowden carried out the manifold duties of his office, and in view of the increasing amount of work entailed his salary was substantially increased. Mr W. H. Mandeno was reappointed supervisor, the council at the time expressing high appreciation of his work. The council constituted itself a finance committee, and the chairman, clerk, and one councillor appointed to operate on the bank account. A hearty vote of thanks was passed to Mr J. A. Young, M.P., for the untiring manner with which he had looked after the Council's interests during the three years he had been in Parliament.
