WAIPA COUNTY COUNCIL.
The monthly meeting of the Waipa County Council was held on Tuesdav at Ohaupo. Mr Edward Allen, chairman, presided. There were also present: Hon. J. Fisher, M.L.C., Messrs Macky, Alexander, Poynter, Ryburn, Teasdale, and McGhie. Mr Ryburn was granted leave of absence. THE GRAVEL CONTRACT. With reference to the above the supervisor stated that he had approached Mr C. Roose, junr., Mercer, to see if he could take on the whole job, quarrying, towing and unloading metal. Mr Roose wrote on Bth instant that he would make it 4s Qd per yard for Hope-Johnstone's lot as requested. He would be willing to contract as follows ;—IOOO yards, Whatawhata, 5s 3d; 2000 yards, Hope-Johnstone's 4s 9d, and 1000 yards, Te Rore, 4s 3d; payment for barges to be taken out of 25 per cent, from each payment. The supervisor recommended that this offer be accepted, and it was agreed to. COMPENSATION. A claim for £25 as compensation to Mr R. Fisher for land taken, amounting to an act e and a-half, in connection with the deviation at Walker's Gully, was passed for payment. It was stated that the charge made was extremely reasonable. ROAD METAL SUPPLY.
Mr P. Gilchrist, on behalf of the members of the Tirohia Quarry Company, wrote that they understood that the council would soon require a considerable quantity of road metal, and suggested that the chairman and supervisor should pay them a visit at Te Aroha concerning what they might do in the matter of supply. They could, view the quarry and see the quality of the metal, and it was possible that terms might be arranged. The chairman said he had seen one of. the directors, and as the price quoted was 6s, as against 4s od which they had been paying, he thought it was unreasonable, and it would be of no use to visit the quarry—Agreed to. METAL SUBSIDIES. ' Mr Young, M.P., forwarded a letter from the Minister for Public Works stating that the council's application for the £ for £ subsidies on certain roads proposed to be metalled would be duly considered when the estimates are being prepared. Finsden was granted per-
mission to erect a temporary fence on the road at the back of his property, for the purpose of clearing the land of noxious weeds.—Referred to Rangiaohia Road Board. ENGINEER'S REPORT. Mr W. H. Mandeno, reported as follows: —
"In reference to obtaining a supply of metal from Hodgson's quarry, I saw the men who had the contract for loading, etc., under the Raglan Council, and they positively refused to take up another contract. Subsequently I wrote Mr C. Roose, the contractor for towing, and hive since seen him twice in reference to the matter. After discussing the position thoroughly, I have now obtained a written offer from him, both for the purchase of our two barges, and delivery of gravel as required. The graders: The No. I machine, after being laid up for the last three months, again started work on the Ist inst. The machine has been completing the formation of "Grand Vue " Road, near Frankton, and the work is about finished. Unless otherwise instructed I propose to send the machine next to do some grading work on the HamiltonTuhikaramea road, No. 3, after completing the job on the road near Mr Jary's farm, I utilised the machine to grade a section of the Te Awamutu-Pirongia Low road previous to metalling. On the 24th September he commenced on the Innesfalien roads and is still working there. In connection with this job, I find that a portion of the roadline, as laid off through section 355, Ngaroto, is very unsuitable, and would be expensive to construct, and an unsatisfactory road when made. A slight deviation would remedy this, but it would be necessary to enter section 354, and it appears the only way to acquire the right to do so would be by using the provisions of the Public Works Act, but as it only involves taking about three acres of unused and uncultivated land, the expense could not be great, and I would like the council to authorise it being done. Metalling : On the Te Awa-mutu-Pirongia Road another section of about 20 chains has been metalled. Apparently no further metalling can be done on this road unless some of the loan money can be obtained, and I would suggest that. application be made for, say, an additional £SOO on account. On the Te Awamutu-Ohaupo Road what is known as " Green Hill" will require attention before another winter, the sand applied being nearly all gone. The best plan would be to metal the hill, and if a portion of the Rangiaohia loan (say, £500) were obtained this work could be done. With a view to expediting the work of metalling ordered on the road between Hamilton and Tuhikaramea, I arranged to get 300 yards of metal stored at the depot near Frankton. The work is nearly completed. Walker's Gully : The cutting will shortly be through, but there will be some shortage of filling, which will be obtained from some of the adjacent banks. Owing to the distance the men have lately been working from where traffic crosses the tramway, it was found that the passage of stock caused much inconvenience, and also a good deal of risk. I therefore advertised the road as closed to that kind of traffic, and also put up notices warning drovers. I have been requested to provide steps in front of the schoolhouse for foot passengers, and, as we have cut off access, I think the request is only a fair one. The report was adopted.
