METAL SUPPLIES.

The possibility of securing ~" supplies of metal for the roading of this district from the deposits in Mount Kakepuku was touched upon at the recent meeting of the Town Board, and in accordance witthe decision reached, a party visited the Kakepuku mountain yesterday for the purpose of investing and reporting upon the supply. The party were conveyed by motor car, which had been placed at the service of the Board by Mr. Lawson's firm. The following members attended: Mr H. Munro Wilson (engineer), Mr A. S. Wallace (chairman), Mr Chas. Bowden (clerk, Waipa County Council), Mr Lawson, and a representative of this paper. The site inspected was on section 4, Kakepuku settlement, the property of Mr Clement. Running almost from the base ot the hill to a very fair height the metal deposits run in layers of varying thicknesses. Of course, not until proper -tests be made, can any idea be formed as to the quantity of metal in the seam,'but on the surface alone there is a very con- A siderable amount. The party seemed to be very favourably impressed with the general quality of the stone which, wherever tested, was extremely hard. No indication, however, can yet be given until the extent and quality of the deposit have been properly ascertained. Samples of the surface metal were brought away, and these will possibly be submitted to an engineering test. It is also possible that a test will be made to ascertain the depth of the reef. The are several other reefs in the vicinity of the one inspected, and surface deposits on these parts alone would provide a very extensive supply of metal for roading purposes. At an approximate estimate the site inspected is about one mile and a half from the railway line.
