WAIPA COUNTY COUNCIL

At the usual meeting of the above council Cr E. Allen presided.

H<sn. J. Fisher, M.L.C., wrote stating that his appointment to the Legislative Council had necessitated his resigning his position as chairman of the council, after-15 years’ service.—Cr E. Allen was unanimously elected chairman.

Mr H. Jary, of Mangapiko, forwarded a petition, on behalf of himself and three other ratepayers, asking the council to reform and grade the road leading from Mangapiko school to the Frontier road. —It was decided to do the work. The clerk to the Waitomo County Council wrote agreeing to the northern part of their county being transferred to the Waipa County.—The clerk said that everything had been done, and only waited the Governor’s proclamation. Miss Statham, of the Department of Internal Affairs, wrote asking if the council would deviate the road at Orakau so as to avoid going over the spot where the Maori warriors were buried. —The clerk was instructed to reply sympathising with the idea, but referring the matter to the Government, who had the scheme in hand.

The engineer, in his report, said little time had been lost with No. 2 grader, which had been chiefly working in the Mangapiko riding. The work at Walker’s gully is making satisfactory progress, but a temporary road had had to be made. The metalling on the Te Rapa-Te Kowhai road, after some delay owing to non-delivery of metal, is now proceeding. Other metal is coming to hand, but in view of the present crisis the question arises as to spending more money in anticipation of obtaining it from the Government. Maintenance work has been carried on with good results. One side of the road at Mystery Creek had been completed, and although the other side is not completed the road is open. —The report was received.

In connection with the engineer’s report, a letter was received from the Hon., J. Fisher, stating that he had had an assurance from the Government that all loans, provisionally approved, would be executed by the Government, but on account of the war lresh loans would be almost impossible to raise. Various complaints as to the bad state of the roads were referred to the engineer.
