The Waipa Post. PUBLISHED EVERY TUESDAY AND FRIDAY FRIDAY, AUGUST 14, 1914. LOCAL AND GENERAL.
Mr E. Kerr, who has recentlytaken over the Star Hotel at Kihikihi, has a notice in' this issue.
Messrs Lawson, Swain, and Walker, Ltd., by advertisement, notify a sale of trees and shrubs, which takes place at the mart tomorrow.
A notice appears elsewhere to the effect that all Claims against the estate of the late R. S. Matthews, farmer, of Otorohanga, must be forwarded to Messrs English and Luxford, Hamilton, on or before 31st August, 1914. A special practice of performers in the Patriotic Concert, which takes place to-night, is to beheld at the Town Hall at 2.45 this afternoon. Employers are specially requested, for the sake of the cause, to allow their assistants to attend.
A public meeting of ratepayers of the Rangiaohia Riding of the Waipa County is advertised to take place at the Town Hall, Te Awamutu. The purpose -of this meeting, which takes place at 3 p.m. to-morrow, is to consider the proposal to raise a loan of £3,000. One of the chief features of Everylady’s Journal for August, just to hand, is a very beautifullyillustrated article on gardening for women, in which the writer shows how gardening may be made, not only a delightful hobby, but a paying matter for any woman with energy and brains.
We are pleased to note that a start has been made in having the verandahs extended to the new width of the footwalk along Alexandra Street, and hope that, wherever practicable, the action of Messrs W. J. Thompson and Son will be followed by others, so that our footwalks may soon present a uniform appearance. Mr T. E. Rodda, of the Agricultural Department, is at present laying out the grounds preparatory to planting the fruit-testing acre at Mr S. J. Fortescue’s property near the railway station. It will be remembered that the negotiations between the Chamber of Commerce and the Department for the establishment of an experimental plot at Te Awamutu were concluded at the close of last season, although the actual planting is only now being done. A demonstration will be given at 2.30 p.m. next Wednesday, and the public are invited to attend. In his official capacity as chairman of the School Committee, the Rev. F. W. Clarke yesterday morning addressed the children prior to their commencing work for the day. He referred to the present troublous times, and urged upon the children the necessity of being patriotic. They could be loyal to their country and their king by growing up to be good and useful citizens. He instanced the good work being done by mere boys in safe-guard-ing public property throughout Great Britain and the oversea Dominions, and urged each of his little hearers to emulate such examples. He was listened to most attentively, and as a fitting conclusion to the address the children rose and sang most heartily the National Anthem.
