Tenders are invited by Messrs Warren and Blechynden, architects, Hamilton, for alterations and additions to Mr G. M. A. Ahier's store. Full particulars appear elsewhere, Mr J. A. Young, Waikato, has been informed by Hon. W. Fraser that this year's estimates' will coritain a vote on account of the sum of £2,000 asked for by the Kawhia County Council for the Pirongia West road. Owing to the illness of Rev. W. Perry, the anniversary services in connection with the Kihikihi Presbyterian Church on Sunday last were conducted by the pastor. In the morning an address dealing with the present crisis was delivered. There were large congregations present.
Mr W. Jeffery informs us that the rainfall for the week ending Monday night was .91 inches. The monthly meeting of the-Te Awamutu Chamber of Commerce takes place to-night. The annual meeting of the Te Awamutu Defence Rifle Club is advertised to take place at the Cosmopolitan-club room to-mor-row evening at 7.30 o'clock. A meeting of the band contest committee took place at the office of the WAIPA POST last night, Mr F. D. Wood presiding over a good attendance. Detail matters were considered, and the secretary was instructed to communicate with the other bands entered and report. The meeting accordingly adjourned for a fortnight. A public meeting is advertised to take place at the Te Awamutu Town Hall on Wednesday (tomorrow) afternoon at 3 o'clock. This meeting is convened by several prominent citizens for the purpose of arranging assistance for the expeditionary force, and a full attendance of fanners and townspeople is requested. The meeting takes place at the local Town Hall at 3 p.m. At the monthly meeting of the Waikato Hospital Board held on Thursday Dr Douglas reported that during July 59 males and 28 females had been admitted, 3 male patients had died, 49. males and 36 females were discharged, and there were 74 males and 35 females remaining in the hospital. Forty-three operations were performed during the month. The daily average number of patients was 108.
On Wednesday the last meet of the season in the Te Awamutu District of the Waikato Hunt Club took place at " Woodstock," the homestead of Mr C. J. Storey. There was a fair attendance, visitors from several districts following the hounds which were thrown off in the early hours of the afternoon. Although the day was a perfect one the trail seemed hard to locate, but there were several good runs and one kill resulted. Afternoon tea was provided by the good people of "Woodstock," which was very much appreciated by all. On Saturday evening, in the presence of a large assemblage of residents and visitors, the Te Awamutu Band, from the steps at the post office approach, played a selection of brass band music. The band was under the control of Bandmaster Newsome and its playing was the subject of much favourable comment. During the evening several patrioticairs were played, each of which, found ready response from the assembled crowd. Cheers were frequently given in a spirited manner, and at times there was much enthusiasm. Residents on every hand congratulated the band on its playing, and the hope was freely expressed that the band would play out again at an early date.
Last evening in the Presbyterian Church Hall, some 40 persons assembled in answer to a request to assist as- a united choir towards the coming patriotic concert to be held in the Town Hall on Friday. The Rev. F. W. Clarke, briefly thanked those who had come forward to assist. He stated the object of the concert was to raise a fund which would be used to the best advantage by a committee appointed for the purpose, and not as first suggested, towards the purchase of a cavalry horse. The following committee was appointed: Mrs H. Andrew, Miss Mandeno; Messrs A. S. Wallace, G. M. Archibald, E. A. Chamberlain, and Rev. F. W. Clarke. Mr De Coek was elected treasurer, and Mr W.J. Dil secretary. A most successful practice was held, and it was announced that another practice will beheld this evening. Some 30 scholars from the local school will also take part in the concert. •
