Mr. W. Jeffery informs us that the rainfall for the week ending Monday night was '66 inches. A meeting of the residents of Kihikihi is advertised to. take place in the Kihikihi Town Hall on Wednesday, I2th August.

The Te Awamutu Town Band will play a selection of brass band music at Te Awamutu (Alexandra Street) on Saturday evening next at 7.30 pan. as advertised.

The football match, Waipa v. Pakarangi (Auckland), to be played at Te Awamutu on Saturday next at 3 pan. is advertised. 1 he proceeds of this fixture will go to the technical school.

Temporary premises have been secured by the Town Board in Arawata Street, next to Thomas? drapery store. These premises will be used for the conducting of the Board’s business for the present.

The prices of stock are “up ” in no uncertain manner. A line of 100 fat ewes taken out of the Taihape district last week changed hands at 30s. This price constitutes what is probably a record.

We acknowledge the receipt of a complimentary ticket for the grand variety entertainment which takes place at Pirongia on Friday next. The arrangements in connection with the entertainment are in the hands of an energetic committee.

Mr Allan Graham, of Te Awamutu, has joined the staff of Messrs Dalgety and Co. He will reside in Te Awamutu, and look after the firm’s interests in the surrounding district. Mr Graham has been managing Mr Madill’s farm at Te Awamutu for the last eighteen months, and is well known throughout the district.

The Public Works Department has accepted the following tenders :—Post office at St. John’s, N. Meuli, Wanganui, £7 19 1 Rangiriri bridge, Waikato River, Donald McLean, Wellington, £9666; Waiau Stream bridge, Tauranga, Joseph Brain, Tauranga, £768; Puniu River bridge, Te Awamutu, W. G. Care, Cambridge, £915.

A successful “ wet ” practice of the Te Awamutu Fire Brigade took place last evening. Some 500 feet of new hose were used, which stood the test satisfactorily. The men showed marked improvement, and displayed interest in their work. Four leads of hose were attached to one plug and excellent results obtained. The men appeared for the first time in their new uniforms.

The Kihikihi ladies’ hockey team journeyed to Ohaupo on Saturday, and played a match with the Ohaupo team. The game proved a close and interesting contest, the result being a win for the home team by 2 goals to I. Misses E. Edwards and N. Smith scored for Ohaupo, and Miss Hendricksen shota goal for the Kihikihi te-am. Mr C. Edwards referred. An English stock writer, “ Looker On,” says he is of opinion that it is on the polo pony we shall have to rely in the not very distant future, at any rate to a very considerable extent, for the breeding of our half-breed horses. Much in little, he combines great weight - carrying power with pace and stamina, and this is no doubt to be attributed to his balans^tf^ffS^lie 1 greater correctness of outline.

In Ashburton at the present time, says a local paper, shooting parties are receiving good remuneration for their bags of hares, export buyers going as high as 2s 4d a pair. Flares are very numerous, and the recent heavy falls of snow in the high country have driven them towards the seaboard. A good many young men are now engaged in hare shooting, which they find not only pleasurable, but profitable.
