Mrs. Jinks, the hostess, was holding forth on the decay of mangers amongst the “lower class.” “I tell you, my dear friends, the day seems to be coming fast when manners, as we understand them, will cease to exist among servants. I really must speak to Mary.” Since Mary happened then to come in with some cakes, -Mrs. .finks proceeded to rebuke her in the presence of the guests. .'“Mary,” she said, “I really must insist that you keep earlier hours in tho kitchen. Last night I was kept awake for hours by the coarse laughter of you and your Iriouds!-’ “And I’m not surprised, ma’am!” said Mary. “Cook nearly made us all die of laughing tolling us bow you tried to make a cake the other day! ’
