HOCKEY.

WAIPA (2) V. CAMBRIDGE (1).

The hockey match between the above representative teams took place at Bockett’s paddock on Wednesday afternoon. Cambridge had some, difficulty in getting a team together to make the journey, as several of the proposed players were unable to get away. However, rather than disappoint the Waipa representatives, the journey was made with the men available. The team did not arrive at Te Awamutu till about 4 p.m., and play was commenced at once. The ground was a trifle heavy, and the afternoon bitterly cold. The visitors soon assumed the aggressive; hard hitting sent the ball over the line, and then Waipa got to work, L.

North taking the ball to Cambridge territory, and from a tussle in the circle Johns scored. The visitors rushed play from the bully, and, Duncan speculating, missed, but Douglas came to the rescue and cleared. A good passing rush was spoilt by Johns giving “ sticks ” when close to the circle. Cambridge at once carried play into Waipa territory, but Macky cleared, and the home forwards again took charge, Cambridge being obliged to concede

a corner. Peake (Cambridge) was playing a good game, and trans- - ferred operations. The Waipa men were soon back again, but Parker missed a shot. Finn was instrumental in stopping some good shots. Cambridge players were hitting well, but the local full-backs, especially Douglas, showed sound defence. The for-

wards by combined play got to the circle, and Johns endeavoured to goal. The Cambridge custodian, was safe and stopped the shot.’ Parker shortly after found the net with a good shot. Cambridge made several subsequent rushes into their opponents’ circle but found the defence solid.

The second half was started by Gordon taking the ball well up the field and centring to Johnstone, but the latter, in his eagerness, drove the ball over the line. Duncan, for using his feet instead of his stick, got his side into trouble. Cambridge were showing a marked improvement in their play, and the forwards were combining well. Crook narrowly missed the net on one occasion. Cambridge were having decidedly the best of matters, and they were constantly attacking, the ball on one occasion going over the top of the net. It was now getting dusk, and it was with difficulty that players could distinguish the ball. Cambridge were making great efforts to score, and they were at- last rewarded, Crook finding the net. Time was called shortly after. The game was controlled by Mr Miller in an efficient manner.

At times the game was fairly fast, but there was an absence of vim by both teams. The local forwards combined well, and no fault could be found in that direction. Their shooting, however, was not of the best. The half-line proved to be the weak

spot in the team. Macky, although playing well at times, did pot keep position. The visitors were entertained to tea at the Empire Cafe. Prior to the match, a. meeting

of the Waipa representatives was held. Mr J. Duncan was elected manager of the team, and Mr W. H. Johns captain. The team leaves for Auckland on Monday next by II a.m. train. LADIES’ MATCH.

The Kihikihi ladies’ hockey team paid a visit to Te Kuiti yesterday and played a game with the representatives of the Te Kuiti club. The day was fine and a splendid game was witnessed, the home team winning by one goal to nil. The referee, Mr C. Turner, spoke highly of the play of both teams. The visitors on their return were loud in their praises of the hospitality shown them by the members of the Te Kuiti team, their visit proving a most enjoyable one.
