CORRESPONDENCE.

(Out correspondents’ opinions tire their own: the responsibility of editorial items makes sufficient ballast for the editor’s shoulders. It is necessary that all letters for publication should bear the name of the writer — not necessarily for publication, but as evidence o f good faith.) TO THE EDITOR. SIR, —I desire to call the attention of your cycling and athletic readers to the fact that the Auckland centre has given notice that on July 31st it will secede from the New Zealand Athletic and Cycling Union, which is the controlling body for cash athletics and for all cycling events in New Zealand. Under the said New Zealand Union there is a complete system of local government by centres. There is likewise a reciprocal agreement with the governing bodies of cash athletics throughout Australia, and with the New Zealand Axemen’s Association. If Auckland, as a centre, secedes, the disadvantages to outside clubs will be many ; (a). No competitors from outside will be allowed to compete at Auckland gatherings, (b). Competitors at Auckland will be prevented from competing elsewhere in New Zealand or Australia, at meetings under the control of the New Zealand and kindred Unions, (c). Outside clubs will be debarred from availing themselves of New Zealand axemen’s events. Your readers will readily see that outside clubs will be placed at a decided disadvantage if Auckland secession eventuates. The New Zealand Athletic and Cycling Union has ever worked in the interests of clean sport, and I trust that all local enthusiasts will give this matter their earnest consideration, and exert their influence to prevent the secession, of which notice has already been given. Perhaps the local Athletic and Cycling Club, which still nominally exists, could take some immediate action in this matter, and so assist other outside clubs to prevent any injury being done to their cause. —I am, etc., Sport.
