MEETING OF LIBRARY COMMITTEE.

A meeting of the library committee was held at.the library on Wednesday evening, with Mr Collins in the chair. Although few were in attendance a very-, important and progressive move in the right direction was suggested, and it is hoped will be carried to a successful issue without undue delay.

First, the applications for the position of librarian were dealt with. There were only two, both ladies, and it was decided to give the position to the younger and more active, since it is a position which calls for regularity of attendance and adaptability to a great variety of individual tastes and temperaments. Therefore, Mrs Morton’s application was accepted, and we trust she will fulfil the expectations of her appointment, and attract subscribers and give general satisfaction in the performance of her duties.

Earnest discussion then followed as to’the betterment of the library. It was considered essential that better and more suitable premises on .the present site were necessary. To this end a deputation of Dr Hall and Mr Collins was appointed to wait upon the Town Board at its next meeting and lay before it the suggestion that it (the Town Board) demolish the present buildings and re-erect in brick Town Board offices, with library accommodation up-stairs.

The public is reminded and urged to assist this worthy and useful institution to-night' by attending the concert, which has been organised by Mr Collins to raise funds. Citizens are eager for their good men to take public positions, but too often forsake them to fulfil their dutiessinglc-handed without any thought as to the hopelessness of such a task when the public will not see the necessity of backing up the men it had asked to fill office.
