After some loose play a frge hit was awarded against Pirongia, and the visitors put the ball out in Pirongia’s 25, from where hard hitting put the ball over the line. After the next bully off Peat was conspicuous. Pirongia had a free hit and Rovers missed scoring, Owqn saving nicely. “Sticks” by Rovers gave Owen a chance, and by returning smartly A. Fear shot a fine goal. Give and take play followed. Another free hit gave Rovers a chance to press, but Prendergrast was safe and sent the ball down the field. Obstruction by Pirongia and a free hit was given against them. As the result of splendid passing L. Davis scored nicely. Play then livened up a little. / Obstruction by Pirongia saw their circle being invaded, hift Owen again saved. After/the spell Rovers had a free,hit, but L. Peat put the ball, out in time. Pirongia were awarded a free hit and following up smartly almost scored, /the Rovers’ backs were safe and soon had the ball back in ffheir opponents’ 25. Obstruction by Rovers and Owen lifted bm\ too high. Rovers again ralliedf and some fine passing “ancUmitting was witnessed. A. F§ar saved with a fine hit. Play a bit mixed, and L. North received a nasty knock, but was able to continue in a few minutes. Rovers set out to make the pace j hot, but Sheffield saved nicely. lOn Rovers again pressing a | penalty bully was the result, and jL. Davis scored again. Pirongia I started in to push matters, but | Soloman was in his place and ! saved. Give and take play was | continued, and Pirongia’s goal- ] keeper, Geo. Finn, settled an alI most certain score. More loose
play saw Soloman get a knock, but was also able to continue after a few minutes. There were very few free hits on either side. In fact, there were more obstructions, and players should be more
careful, as the general opinion was that the game would have ended in quite a different way. For the Rovers, not one weak spot could be seen. The hitting and stopping by Duncan, Douglas and North was splendid. For Pirongia, Finn, Prendegrast, Sheffield and Owen v/ere conspicuous. Mr C. Davis made an impartial referee.
Rovers will be represented by the following against Paterangi at Paterangi to-morrow :--Goal, Clotworthy ; full-backs, F. North, W. Douglas (captain); halves, D. Griffith, Solomon, Duncan; forwards, Hurley, Finch, L. Davis, McCathie, L. North. The following will represent Waratahs against Pirongia at Eockett’s paddock to-morrow: — Goal, Spear; full-backs, Parker, Johnson; halves, H. Andrew, T. Davis, McGiven; forwards, Bridle, Ahier, Alright, Johds, Ironsides. Mr W. H. Johns, captain of the Waratahs, has been selected by the Auckland Hockey Association to play in the trial representative match A. v. B. at Auckland on Saturday. A brother of Mr Johns, a third-grade Mt. Eden player, who was promoted this year to the seniors, is also incluPed in the A team. It is gratifying to notice that among the large number of players to be selected from in the Auckland Province, a representative of the Waipa Hockey Association has been chosen.
