TE AWAMUTU TOWN BOARD.

The usual fortnightly meeting of the above Board took place at the Board's office on Friday afternoon. Present: —Messrs A. S. Wallace (chairman), S. C. Mathews, W. Taylor, J. 8., Teasdale, and Dr 'Reekie. The Board's engineer, Mr H. Munro Wilson, and the turncock operator, Mr J. Owsley, were also present. Minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed, also outward and inward correspondence.

CEMETERY. •* •,- Messrs Swarbrick and Swar- > brick wrote forwarding a bill of costs in reference to the cemetery v site. It was pointed out that delay in the matter was in no way caused by them, and particulars were given as to the reason that they were not able to get a clear title. ROAD ROLLER. In reply to a request, the manager for Messrs Booth Macdonald and Co., Ltd., wrote giving particulars and supplying cost of McLaren road roller.. WATERWORKS. The foreman of works for-J warded the following report, - dated May 15th, 1914:—Owing to completion of portion of the pipe-laying work at noon yester-' day, I discharged ten men out of a total of twenty-one, and naturally kept the best of them." There were four of Rule's men rejected, and he did not raise auy objection, but at 8.30 a:m/this, morning he left the employ 0f.,--. the Board without a moment's ' notice, giving as his reason that I had discharged his men. He has done this at a critical time. There is two days' work to complete his work, and I have to ■? teach a man how to do it. The action of Rule will cost the Board' about £lO by delays, and will , show the Board the value of some of the local labour as I find itReceived. . ' APPLICATION FOR PAYMENT.

CEMENT. •The produce manager of the Farmers' Co-operative Auctioneering Co., Hamilton, wrote stating that the company were agents for Crown brand cement, an d stating they would be pleased to supply information' should the Board require same. —Received.-: DRAINS, r ■■■',,.'■•; ■'■' Mr Mathews, who was deputed to see that certain drains were cleaned out, reported that the work had been satisfactorily done. ■'-?":: % RATS. ; ; v Dr Reekie stated that complaints had been made that the room adjoining the supper room •. at the Town Hall was infested ..—: by rats; and it was not' safe to" use it for storing eatables. The room was only partly lined. —Ifcf was decided to have the neces~y sary portion lined. ERECTION OF AWNING. A request was received from. , the secretary of the Bachelors''/ Ball committee asking to be allowed to erect an awning alongside the Town Hall on the occasion of their annual ball. —On themotion of Dr Reekie the request was granted. TENDERS. , ' * It was decided to submit the tenders received for the reading - : of Raikes' estate to Mr ,H.. Collins for approval. The clerk was instructed to call tenders for formation of footpath in Park Road. CONSERVATION AREA. ■' . ■

The chairman reported that ire had visited Auckland, and had! interviewed the Commissioner of ' ' Crown Lands with regard to the conservation of land at for water and scenic purposes. The Commissioner expressed himself in sympathy with the request, and would recommend that steps be taken to have a certain area set apart. He advised the Board to approach the Minister of Lands on the matter.—lt wasdecided to ask the co-operation, of other local bodies interested; in the movement. ' ? WATERWORKS NEARING COMPLETION. In answer to an inquiry fromi the chairman, the engineer stated that at the present rate of pro- : gress, the works in connection with the water supply should be; . completed within ' a montkTx Messrs Battson and Prescott were making good progress with their contract, which would be completed very shortly. ."' . » ROACH STREET. The grading of * Roach Street ~> having been completed, At was '• resolved that the same and sanded to Herbert Street, and the footpath be sanded.... ; , KERBING. • IfV The engineer reported that it i was proposed to start kerbing and channelling almost immediately, the contractor having sufficient material available.
