The Waipa Post. PUBLISHED EVERY TUESDAY AND FRIDAY TUESDAY, MARCH 10, 1914. LOCAL AND GENERAL.

The Chamber of Commerce meets to-night. On Saturday last a meeting of the Kawa Drainage Board was held at Te Awamutu, when consideration was given to the various drainage works in hand. Mr A. E. Jull. it is stated, will contest the Waipawa seat at the next election in the Opposition interests against Mr G. Hunter, the Government member. At the Te Awamutu Police Court yesterday morning, before Mr H. T. Jones, J. p ., a first offender, who had been in custody since Saturday evening on a charge of drunkenness, was convicted and discharged. There was quite a large assemblage at Alexandra Park (Kihikihi) on Sunday afternoon, when the Te Awamutu Band played several selections there. The music was greatly enjoyed by all, and we hope to have the pleasure of listening to the band again in the near future. —Kihikihi correspondent. At the conclusion of mass in St. Patrick’s Church, Te Awamutu, on Sunday last, Mr George Girling-Butcher, organising secretary of the New Zealand Catholic Federation, delivered a most interesting lecture on the aims and objects of the federation, a strong branch of which already exists in this district. In referring to the constitution of the Te Awamutu Borough at Saturday’s meeting of the Town Board, Mr J. B. Teasdale stated that he had been advised by the Hon. Minister for Internal Affairs that the petition for an extension of the boundaries was being considered, and that a commission will sit at Te Awamutu to hear objections and determine upon the boundaries to be adopted. An important sale of household furniture will take place to-mor-row, when Messrs Lawson. Swain, and Walker will offer, on behalf of Mr George Irvine, the whole of his furniture and effects. The furniture is as good as new, and those about to furnish should not miss this opportunity, as everything will be sold without reserve. A detailed list of the goods to be offered appears in another column. Considerable interest is taken by members of the local bowling club in the Norden Stars, for which the.first series of matches was only recently held. The original winners were immediately challenged, and since then, each of the succeeding winners have had to play to retain the Stars, within a few days of their obtaining them. The first to hold the Stars were Messrs. F. Edgecurnbe and A. Wood. They were challenged and lost to Messrs. Henderson senior and Henderson junior, who in turn passed them on to Messrs. H. Y. Collins and Mclnnes. Shortly afterwards the Stars were won by Messrs. A. White and Henderson junior, who on Saturday last, lost to Henderson senior and J. T. North.

In a note on the state of the money market, the “ New Zealand Trade Review ” says : Since our last report there has not been any very pronounced movement towards easier conditions, but the i tendency of the market is in that : direction, and there is a gradual ! easing going on. The realisaj tions from our exports are coming in now, and helping the position, and before long the Government loan money will be available. When this money gets into circulation, say in another two months, it will materially assist the money supply locally and stimulate trade all round. Our exports are keeping up splendidly in volume, being on the whole well ahead of last season, and the prices realised are maintaining an excellent level, so that when the season closes we should see a total value ahead of all previous records. We look for a gradual but steady improvement in the monetary position from now on, and a good period of steady satisfactory trading in all sections.”
