CROQUET CLUB.
At a meeting of the members of the Croquet Club on Wednesday, the report and balance sheet in connection with the recent art union, the object of which was .the reducing of the debt on the club’s new pavilion, was submitted by Mr W. F. Stewart, vvho had undertaken the organisation and control of the venture. The result was eminently satisfactory, the balance sheet showing the whole amount required to- have been raised, leaving the club with , a new and commodious pavilion entirely free of debt. The total cost of the pavilion was £53 15s. Towards this the sum of £9 was realised from the Irish concert, organised by Mesdames W. Taylor and G. M. Ahier, and to this was added the sum of £3 odd, entrance fees trom competitions on the club’s lawn on the opening day, leaving a balance of £4l Us still owing. To reduce this indebtedness an art union was suggested, with the result as already stated, the total extinction .of the debt. The actual profits from the art union were £33 10s, which amount was augmented by donations from, the club’s supporters to the extent of £8 Is, making the total receipts on account of. the pavilion building fund £53 15s, the full amount required. The members, in expressing their appreciation of the successful efforts of Messrs Stewart and Stevenson in connection with the art union, accorded those gentlemen a hearty vote of thanks. Votes of thanks were also passed to Mesdames Archibald, Taylor, Kayll, Ahier, and Lowry (Hastings), Miss Stewart, Dr Henderson, Messrs D. Bockett, J. Jackson, S. C. Mathews, C. Bowden, Mclnnes, and W. F. Stewart for donations.
Members commented freely on the smallness of the working expenses of the art union, which totalled only £6 14s 6d for advertising, printing of tickets and circulars, stationery, postages, telegrams, etc. All croquet clubs throughout the Dominion were canvassed with considerable success, the receipts therefrom being equal to more than twice the total of the working expenses. The Croquet Club is to be congratulated on its success, which, however, is.no more than the pluck of its members deserves. By their enterprise the lady members have considerably added to the beauty of Victoria Park by the erection of their pavilion. To Mr T. Mclnnes, the designer and builder of the pavilion, no small credit is due.
