CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.
The monthly meeting of the Te Awamutu Chamber of Commerce was held on Tuesday-even-ing in the Cosmopolitan club room. Present Messrs W. F. Stewart (chairman), A. Young, J. B. Teasdale, T. Spear, J. M. Spear, G. Spinley, O. Heerdegen, J. Oliphant, Fortescue, H. R. Ryder, and Rev. D. J. A. Shaw.
Minutes of the previous meetng were read and confirmed.
NEW MEMBERS. Messrs A. C. Tremain and J. Maloney were elected members of the Chamber. CORRESPONDENCE. Outward correspondence was read and approved. A letter was read from Mr J. Le Sueur, Auckland, expressing regret at the illness of the president. He hoped Mr von Sturmer would soon be restored to his usual health, and again at the head of the Chamber’s affairs. HOLIDAYS. The secretary of the Otorohanga Chamber of Commerce wrote asking to be supplied with a list of the holidays -to be observed by the business people in Te Awamutu for the information and guidance of the Otorohanga Chamber—The secretary reported having supplied the list. HALF HOLIDAY! In. reply to a letter re observance of half-holiday in factories and shops Mr »W. Newton, officer in charge of the Department of Labour, Auckland, wrote stating that the matter of Holidays selected under the Shops and Offices Act, does not in any way effect the operation of awards made by the Arbitration Court in the various trades.—As this was a matter for the Retailers’ Association to deal with, it was resolved that the letter be referred to that body. RAILWAY LEAGUE. A communication was read from Mr C. M. Innes, secretary of the United Bay of Plenty Railway league, stating that a meeting of delegates from bodies affiliated to the League would be held on Tuesday, 10th inst., at Rotorua, for the purpose of discussing the matters to be placed before the Rt. Hon. W. F. Massey by delegates on the evening of Wednesday, nth inst. iKwas asked that a delegate from The Te Awamutu Chamber of merce be present at both meetings.—lt was resolved that Mr M. C. Lawson be appointed to represent the Chamber, and in the event of the latter being unable to go, that a letter be forwarded approving of the League’s representations to the Minister. CEMETERY. The Rev. D. J. Shaw wished to know what action, if any, had 1 been taken by the Chamber in bringing under the notice of the 1 proper authorities, an improve- ' ment in the present existing state of things as regards a burial ground. It was a matter • that demanded immediate attention. 0
The chairman stated that the Chamber hae repeatedly brought the matter forward. Referring to the minute book he stated that as far back as August 2ist, 1911, the matter was brought under the notice of the Board. Since then the matter has been frequently discussed, but up to the present nothing of a definite nature has been done. Mr Teasdale said there had been certain difficulties in the
way of the Board acquiring the title of the new ground. On the motion of Mr Shaw it was agreed that the Town Board be again written to, asking that the matter of acquiring a new burial site be urged forward to completion.
