OPENING OF NEW CROQUET CLUB PAVILION.

Splendid weather was experienced on Wednesday afternoon, when at the invitation of the Croquet Club committee a large gathering assembled at the croquet greens at Victoria Park to witness the opening of the new pavilion. Mr W. F. Stewart, in a short speech, on behalf of the president, gave a brief history of the club since its formation. Reference was made to the rapid strides the club had made, and they had now launched out and decided to erect a pavilion of their own, which was most'; creditable to them. The ladies had always beefi a great help to other clubs in the matter of providing afternoon tea, and their help in this direction was greatly appreciated. To help defray the cost of the new pavilion they had decided to hold an art union, and he asked those present to do their best and assist the ladies in this matter. The art union would be drawn on 24th inst. On the call of Mr Stewart three cheers were given for the Croquet Club. During the afternoon tea was provided by the ladies, which was very much appreciated by all.

A large number of those present took part in the game “Everybody’s Croquet,” which resulted as follows :—Mrs Archibald I, Mr J. Duncan 2, Mrs W. Taylor 3. The gross takings for the afternoon in aid of the pavilion building fund amounted to £3 16s.
