TE AWAMUTU CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.

The adjourned meeting of the above Chamber took place on Tuesday last at the Cosmopolitan club room. The following members were present: —Messrs W.F. Stewart (chairman) Dr Henderson, A. J. Bray, G. Spinley, G. P. Amor, H. Fortescue, A. Young, M. C. Lawson, J. Middlebrook, H. R. Ryder, J. M. Spear, S. Clark, J. B. Teasdale, R. J. Ross, and A. G. Warburton (secretary). In apologising for the absence of the president (Mr W. N. von Sturmer), on account of ill-health, the chairman expressed the hope that it would not be long before their president was again restored to health and enabled to preside at their meetings. (Applause);

REGISTRATION AND ARBITRATION

The following resolution was forwarded ,by the Kaipara Chamber of Commerce, asking for the Chamber's do-operation and approval:—That this'Chamber views with serious concern the possibility of a recurrence of such lamentable crisis as that which has recently distressed the Dominion and jeopardised its industries. That we are of opinion that to provide an as- • surance of settled conditions some measure of compulsory registration and arbitration is necessary, supported by adequate power under the law to enforce the fulfilment of its awards by the Court against both the property and the person of those failing to carry out the terms of the Award. —It was decided that the resolution be supported. RURAL TELEPHONES. The secretary of the Levin Chamber of Commerce wrote asking to be furnished with particulars in regard to the rural telephone connections. —■ The secretary reported having supplied the necessary information. STOCKING STREAMS. On the motion of Mr Young, seconded by the chairman, it was resolved that a hearty vote of thanks be accorded Mr Kay for liberating the fish _ supplied by the Acclimatization Society. REPORT. The secretary reported having visited Wellington in connection with the following matters: — Discontinuance of north-bound goodstrain, excursion restrictions, Justices of the Peace, fruit settlement, and rural camp school. RURAL CAMP SCHOOLS. The secretary brought forward a proposal that the establishment of camp agricultural schools, on lines somewhat similar to those reported on by Mr Newman, M.P., after his visit, to Australia, be urged upon the Agricultural Department, and moved that a committee be set up to go fully into the matter and confer with the various district branches of the Farmers' Union, and report to a later meeting., After a brief discussion Mr A. Young and the secretary were appointed a committee to this end.

It was proposed that a hearty vote of thanks be accorded Mr J. A. Young, M.P., for his courtesy and interest on the occasion of the secretary's visit to Wellington. A vote of thanks was also v

passed to the secretary for his report.

HOLIDAYS. The sub-committee appointed submitted a report on the list of holidays for 1914 Resolved that the report be adopted, and that the list be submitted to the various business houses concerned for conformation., HALF-HOLIDAYS. It was proposed by Mr Clark, seconded by Mr Spinley, that the Town Board be asked to take a . poll to determine the half-holi-day question, enquiries to be first made as to whether this will bring both factories and shops under the one head. HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY. A letter was read from the Te Awamutu branch of the New Zealand Farmers' Union, asking for the Chamber's co-operation in the establishment of a local Horticultural Society.-—lt was resolved to support the request. The following were appointed a committee to confer with the Farmers' Union and take steps deemed desirable:—-Dr Henderson, Messrs Stewart, Bray, Fortescue and Amor. WORKERS' HOMES. The secretary reported that some of the applicants had withdrawn, and that the required number (six) was not at present in hand. —It was resolved that those persons who had applications in be advised of the position. On the motion of Dr Henderson a hearty vote of • thanks %ras* accorded the subcommittee for its work in this connection. 4
