OBITUARY.
EDWARD IN GLEB Y MILLER Aged 53 Years.
Quite a gloom was cast over Te Awamutu this morning, when it became known that Mr E. 1. Miller, after a very short illness, had passed away during the night. It is but a week ago, that Mr Miller was about in apparently his usual good health, and on Thursday of last week he motored over to Cambridge in the car recently imported by him. On Friday last, he was about with no thought or sign of impending bad health, but as the day ad-
vanced, he complained of feeling unwell and retired at an early hour. On Saturday morning it was found necessary to seek the
advice of Dr Henderson,. who, upon making a careful diagnosis, revealed .the fact that the deceased had contracted pneumonia and was also suffering from weakness of tine heart. F; om the outset but little hopes were entertained for his recovery, and despite all that medical care and attention could do for him, his condition gradually grew worse until he passed away at 10.30 p.m. He was conscious right up to the time of his death and conversed with those at the bedside. Born at Dulwich (Surrey), the deceased spent the earlier part of his life in England. He came to New Zealand 17 years ago, and immediately look up land at Te Tahi (Pirongia). There he resided lor ten years, until in 1906 he took up his residence at Epjsom, Auckland. A year later he had his residence “ Haworth ” erected at Te Awamutu, and re-
sided there until his death. He was married at Pirongia in 1897 by the Rev. Mr Wilson, of Te Aw. wad. During .he whole time he has resided at Te Awamutu the late Mr lviiiier took a very keen interest in local social matters, and there is hardly a club or society in the district, whose province includes education, instruction or amusement, but what has re-
eeived his moral and financial support. Fie hati assisted very largely in the promotion of several of the clubs, and was always ready to support any deserving and worthy institution. He took particular interest in the volume:.movement, and some years ago presented the Miller. Shield to the Waikato Mounted Rifles, which is competed for annually. He was an enthusiastic member of the local bowling club, and there is scarcely an institution in the town of which he is not an influential member. He was a memfoer of tike vestry of St. John’s paiish, and took a
very genuine interest in ms church, lie was one of the hist to urge the establishment of ‘a newspaper at Te Awamutu, and was one of the provisional director.-. f the Waipa Post Printing and Publishing Co., Ltd,, and iater was elected to the original directorate, of which he remained a member until the time of his death. He was aiso one of the trustees of the Te Awamutu Young Men’s .Institute (incorporated), which institution has been about to enter into an entensive scheme of buildings. It was as a result of Air Miller’s efforts that a school was established at Te Tahi. His main
hobby was entomology, which he studied thoroughly. He leaves a widow and nine infant children and a large number of relatives in this district. His only sister, Miss E. 1. Miller, resides at Pirongia, and his brother is at present in Canada.
