TO THE EDITOR. SIR, I have before me some figures, relating to the cost of house and shop lighting by electricity, which will be of interest to at least some of the Te Awamutu ratepayers. These figures are taken from Wellington’s municipal electric lighting department, current for light being supplied at the n'lte of lOtl per unit, with a discount of 3d, and power at 4d per unit, with a discount of id per unit. For a five-roomed house, containing ten.thirty-two candle-power electric metallic filament lights, the consumption

was ninety-two units for twelve months, at 7cl a unit, costing £2 13s 8d —an average of 4s Svfidper month. For power purposes in the running of one electric iron and one four-globe radiator for the months of April. May, June, July, eleven units were consumed at a cost of 2s Qd. A shop situ-., uted in one of the narrowest parts of Willis Street, and using four fifty-candle-power,, four thirty-two-candle-po v/er,and six sixteen-candle-power metallic filament lights, and one one-eighth-horse-power motor, consumed 235 units, costing £6 17s id —an average of lis 5 I -12 cl per month. With the continual advancement of electrical science, and the great improvements iii the new filament lights, these figures could be considerably reduced. Any ratepayer is at liberty to look over the V/ciiington City Council’s lighting department’s books, from which i obtained the foregoing figures. —I am, etc., J. M. Spear.
