WAIPA COUNTY COUNCIL

A special meeting of the Waipa County Council was held at Ohaupo on Wednesday. Present: Mr Fisher (chairman), Crs Poynter, Alexander, Macky, Ryburn, Bryant, Teasdale, McGhie, and Messrs W. H. Mandeno (engineer) and Bowden (clerk). A committee consisting of the chairman, Cr Teasdale and the clerk was set up to go thoroughly into financial matters and interview the bankers. It was further decided to advertise in all the papers circulating in the Waikato to the effect that all rates not paid before November 29th are to be sued for without further notice. The chairman said that he wished to make it public that although the council were in financial straits at present theY hoped to be in a good position within a few weeks if the rates are got in quickly. He wished to point out that these debts were not acquired through reckless extravagance, but through the Government failing to find the money for guaranteed loans. The Public Trustee, however, had promised to take up the loans, put they would have to pay five per cent- interest, one per cent, sinking fund, and the loan to extend over 36% years. The chairman further stated that the council had decided to go on with all works, as it would simply be a suicidal policy to suspend necessary improvements to the roads simply because they were in temporary difficulties.
