WAIPA COUNTY COUNCIL.

MONTHLY MEETING. The ordinary monthly meeting of the Waipa County Council was held at Ohaupo on Wednesday. Present:—Mr John Fisher (chairman), Crs McGhie, Teasdale, Bryant, Ryburn, Poynter, Alexander, Macky and Allen. PIRONGIA BRIDGE CONTRACT. Mr S. B. Sims forwarded final certificate for the Pirongia bridge contract, which showed a balance of £956 lis 9d due to Mr G. M. Fraser, contractor. There had been deducted £22 for eleven days' delay at £2 per day. —It was decided to pay the amount shown according to Mr Sims' account, and hold over the deposit of £SO pending the supervisor's return. EAST COAST RAILWAY.

On receiving the circular letter from the Bay of Plenty League with reference to this subject, Cr Teasdale said their main object was a connection between the East Coast and the Waikato, and he moved that they co-operate with the league and appoint the chairman as delegate. He would not probably be requested to go anywhere.—Cr Bryant seconded. —Cr Ryburn said he would not go that length. He had lived in the district referred to, and a certain amount of opposition had cropped up there. It would be better for them to approve generally of the railway works being pushed on, and the matter being left in the hands of the Minister. He moved an amendment on these lines, which was seconded by Cr Poynter and carried. CRONIN'S HILL. The Pirongia branch of the New Zealand Farmers' Union urged on the council the necessity of metalling Cronin's Hill as soon as possible.—Received. FENCING GRANTED. W. J. Mills, Te Awamutu, received permission to temporarily fence in a portion of his road frontage for cropping purposes. CROWN LAND, NGAROTO PARISH. The Chief Surveyor, Auckland, replying to the memo, of 17th September, stated that the portion of land referred to had now been made a road, and suggested that if plans were supplied the council could take the necessary action to close it. —Mr Karl is to be asked to provide a plan. THE WAIKATO CANAL SCHEME. Several communications with reference to the Canal Conference at Auckland having been read, the chairman reportedthat Messrs Teasdale and Poynter had attended as representatives of the council and other bodies. —Cr. Teasdale referred to the press reports of the conference and said he had agreed at Mr Gunson's request to act as a delegate to Wellington this week. —A vote of thanks to the delegates was passed. THANKS TO MR YOUNG, M.P. A letter from Mr Young, M.P., under date 13th September, was read acknowledging the council's resolution of thanks to him in connection with the time and attention he had devoted in Wellington to their requirements, and also their congratulations on his success in being able to arrange for the Walker's Gully and ,Mangahoe bridge loans. He very much appreciated their goodwill. It was, he added, the valuable assistance of the chairman, Mr John Fisher, which largely contributed to any success which he might have achieved on behalf of the county. In this connection the chairmanread the following telegrams from Mr Young :—I. " September 24 —Have induced Public Trustee to rairtstate Waipa's applications for Walker's Gully and Mangahoe." 2. "October 11— Will be glad to see you next Friday. Have arranged interview with Minister. House still sitting. Leaseholders continue stonewalling Land Biil."—The chairman explained that while in Wellington at the end of the week he was going to inquire into various matters affecting the council. . LOAN APPLICATIONS.

Messrs Swarbrick and SWarbrick forwarded a letter from the Public Trustee in which he said, referring to previous correspondence, he understood the council was in a difficulty consequent on having started the works relying on loans of £17,000 and ,£7OO from' the State Advances Office. In the special circumstances he was prepored to entertain the applications at five per cent, plus one per cent sinking fundi The office fee for supervising the proceedings would be one eighth per cent on the amount of each loan. —Received. ROAD NOT RESPECTABLE. Messrs J. R. Linton, H. Jary, F. W. Finlay, and J. T. Johnson, Mangapiko, wrote thatthey would like the council to make the road fronting their sections a little more respectable. As the council had not spent any money on this road the applicants agreed to carry out the work in a proper manner if the council paid half the cost. —Cr Alexander moved, seconded by Cr Teasdale, that the request be granted. —Cr Allen, seconded by Cr Ryburn, moved that it be referred to the engineer. The amendment was carried. SPECIAL MEETING. It was agreed to hold a special meeting in a fortnight, in the event of the engineer having returned, to overtake arrears.
