CROQUET.
The opening of the Te Awamutu Croquet Club took place on Wednesday afternoon, when a number of visitors were present, including members of the Te Kuiti, Hamilton, Whitiora and Frankton clubs. On behalf of the president, Mrs E. I. Miller, Mr W. F. Stewart extended a hearty -welcome to those present, and more especially to the visitors, whom he trusted would often visit Te Awamutu. He referred to the popularity of the game and the large amount of interest that was being taken in it. The club was now well-established, and was becoming more and more popular among the ladies. There was a marked improvement in the membership of the club, and also a decided improvement in the general play of the members. The club was anxious to keep pace with the other clubs on the Domain, and properly house itself, and hoped that before next season this would be -accomplished. The building, it was hoped, would prove an ornament to Victoria Park. They realised the fact that there were many ladies who could not take part in the game, but who nevertheless wished to be associated with the club. The club had taken a very wise step this season in providing for non-playing membership at a very tempting subscription. The speaker trusted they woujd have a pleasant afternoon's play and thoroughly enjoy themselves. The president, Mrs E. I. Miller, then opened the lawn with an excellent shot and the afternoon's play proceeded merrily in King's weather.
