A freak calf has been discovered on Mr C. Blake’s farm at the Waingawa (Wairarapa). This animal has five legs and an extra pair of hoofs. The fifth leg grows from the brisket, and ends close to the ground with two feet. The animal is alive and well.

The attention of swimming enthusiasts is called to the annual meeting of the Te Awamutu swimming and Life Saving Club, which will be held in the Cosmopolitan club room on Tuesday next. As the business is of importance it is hoped that there will be a large attendance. As the result of a petition recently presented to the Te Kuiti Borough Council, urging that the system of rating on unimproved values’ be adopted, a poll was taken on Monday, the figures being : For the proposal 120; against the proposal 34. There were five informal votes. Majority for unimproved rating, 86. In order to meet the growing demands of the increasing traffic, and to cope with the expected rush during the exhibition, a new double platform, 500 ft long and 18ft wide, is to be erected at the Auckland railway station. When the new platform is completed the Department at Auckland will be enabled to deal with seven trains at one time.

Messrs Dalgety and Co.’s estimate of the Australasian wool clip for the current season is 2,247,000 bales, an increase of 160,000 over the previous year. Australia contributes 1,718,000, and New Zealand 529,000. (Waikato), asked the Minister of Railways whether the Government will make an amendment in the railway tariff schedule by allowing a rebate on the freight paid by local authorities on cast and other pipes used for water works. Replying thereto the Hon. Mr Herries stated that it was intended to revise the tariff at an early date, and the representations made in respect to the freight on pipes used for waterworks will be borne in mind. The court returns at Te Kuiti indicate that the business of the court is increasing very rapidly. For the quarter ending September 30th, plaints to the number of T7l were issued as compared with the corresponding period last year, and 200 processes were served as against 150 for the September quarter of 1912. The amount of £1976 18s 8d was sued for and £1603 19s recovered last quarter, and for the corresponding period last year the amounts were £l3l 17s 4d and £777 Os 4d. During the past quarter the persons apprehended were 86 males and females, while for the corresponding quarter of last year the figures were 46 males. The figures for judgment summonses are 42 as against 26, and cases tried 147 as against 77.
