TE AWAMUTU TOWN BOARD.

The usual fortnightly meeting of the above Board was held at Bockett’s Buildings on Friday afternoon. Present: —Messrs A. S. Wallace (chairman), J. B. Teasdale, S. Mathews. W. Taylor and Dr Reekie. Minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. VICARAGE GATE. Dr Reekie reported that the gate in front of the vicarage had been moved back to the proper boundary, and the work completed. TOWN HALL. Dr Reekie also spoke of the need of a larger and better hall, pointing out the overcrowding that exists now at nearfy every social function. He also called attention to the dangerous steepness of the dressing-room steps, and the miserable state of the lights. He moved that the clerk be instructed to obtain an estimate of cost of acetylene lighting. Seconded by Mr Teasdale and carried. The chairman said that the board’s architect was preparing plans for a new up-to date hall. Outward correspondence was read and confirmed. NEW ROAD. A letter was read from Mr S. B. ,Siins re Messrs Connor and Coombes’ subdivision enclosing £lO, and asking the board to call tenders for the construction of Laurie Street as early as possible. The chairman moved and Mr Teasdale seconded that tenders be called for the work under the supeivision of the board’s engineer. BOROUGH. A letter was read from C. F. Gieson, asking if the board contemplated procuring a plan of the Borough, and he would be pleased to supply an estimate of the probable cost.—Resolved to reply stating that the question of forming the town into a borough was being proceeded with, and the request would be considered. £20,000 WATER SUPPLY LOAN. A letter was read from the deputy - superintendant of the State Guaranteed Advances office stating that the voucher was being prepared for the payment of £2,000 on account of the above loan. It would, however, be necessary for your council to strike a fresh rate if the whole amount of £20,000 is required, as the rate is calculated on the valuation in force at the time when the loan was granted (£91,971), and not upon any subsequent increased valuation. It was also stated that the rate of 2%d in the £ is sufficient for a loan of £17,850, so that amount only can be paid over unless a fresh rate is struck. RUBBISH. A letter was read from Mr F. B. Ticklepenny stating that rubbish was being dumped on his property, and he was endeavouring to have a fence erected, but could not do so until the rubbish was shifted back. Mr Mathews reported that notices had been posted prohibiting persons from depositing rubbish in the locality. REFUND. Messrs Russell and Campbell wrote on behalf of Messrs Briscoe and Co., Ltd., asking for a refund of the deposit in connection with the tender for supply of water pipes. They stated as no communication of the acceptance of Messrs Briscoe and Co.’s tender was made prior to its withdrawal there was no contract. —On the advice ot the Board’s solicitor it was decided to refund the deposit.

Mr D. O’Shea wrote enclosing the preliminary agreement duly signed for the purchase of land at Pirongia for water supply purposes.

A letter was received from the Commissioner of Crown Lands, Auckland, stating that the matter of the redoubt reserve, section 5, Teasdale Settlement, was under consideration, and a decision would be communicated to the Board as soon as possible. PROPOSED BOROUGH.

It was resolved to consult the Board’s solicitors with reference to the constitution of a borough, and also extending the present boundaries. . LOAN. E. F. Warren, deputy public trustee at Auckland, wrote stating that he believed the office at present had no funds available for investment. He would, however, place the application before the public trustee, and advise the B >erd as soon as possible of the result.

Messrs Ban ay and Ay son, solicitors, Wellington, wrote stating that they were unable to entertain the application for a loan of £16,000 far sewerage. -The engineer submitted plans of proposed footpath in Mutu Street, and on the motion of Mr' Teasdale, it was decided that tenders be called for the work.

The wages account of about £3O was passed for payment. The engineer reported on the proposed street improvements, taking of le A els, etc. It was decided to have the principal streets constructed of the same material as used in Queen Street, Auckland.
