The Pirongia Undenominational Sunday School held a most successful social in the hall on Tuesday. The hail was wellfilled with an appreciative audience consisting of the parents and friends of the scholars. Mr Norman Fear, the newly-ap-pointed superintendent, was in the chair. The social was opened by the children singing a hymn. The programme, items of which were given almost entirely by members of Sunday School and Bible-class, was as follows : Pianoforte duet, Master Ray and Miss Bernice Johnson; song, school girls and boys.; recitation, Master Albert Johnson; solo, Miss Elsie Beet; recitation, school boys; recitation (encored), Miss Agnes Rennie; duet (encored), Masters Willie and Jack McCarthy ; song, school girls ; cornet solo (encored), Mr Jack Milligan; recitation (encored), Miss Queenie Anderson; solo (encored), Miss Amy Russell ; instrumental trio, Miss Milligan, Messrs H. Milligan and Holmes ; recitation (encored), Miss Mary Russell ; club drill, Miss Madge Peat; recitation (encored), Master Frank Johnson; song, school girls; recitation, school girls; solo, Miss Fear. Refreshments were handed round, and then games were indulged in till II o’clock. Mr Johnson proposed a vote of thanks to all who had helped in making the evening so thoroughly enjoyable and successful, which was carried with acclamation.
A large number of residents ol Pirongia and surrounding districts met at the Town Hall on Friday evening, where a social was held by members of the hockey club to bid farewell to their late secretary, Mr WingateMullis. Mr H. O. Death, president, occupied the chair, and discoursed at great length on the many sterling qualities of their late secretary. It was due to the latter’s untiring energy that the club was in its present good position. In making him a life member of the club, he stated that his name would never be forgotten by hockey players in Pirongia. He then handed to Mr Wingate-Mullis a case of pipes, suitably inscribed. Mr W. McCarthy, on behalf of the school committee, thanked Mr Wingate-Mullis for the way he had worked to get the children’s tennis courts in order, and it was only owing to his illness that they were not completed. Mr Wingate-Mullis, who was ceived with applause, a pleasure to find thajb'me had so many friends and.w€fl-wishers. He thanked for their handsome pnjtffmt. He exhorted stick together, and he that next season the PJMngia Club would be to the Tore. On behalf of the club he thanked the ladies for providing afternoon tea. He regretted the school tennis courts were not finished, and hoped that some energetic member would see they were completed. He thanked those who had been so kind to him during his illness.
During the evening the following gentlemen rendered items : —- songs, Messrs W. Parker and C. C. Berry ; recitations, Messrs Finn and Chalmers.
Dancing was kept up till midnight, the music being supplied by local talent. On Saturday night a “Trial by Jury ” took place in the library. The case was one of horse-stealing, the part of accused being taken by Mr T. Jones. The other parts were allotted as follows : Judge, Mr Geo. Finn ; crown prosecutor, Mr Parker; council for accused, Mr Chas. Given ; clerk of court, Mr W. Godfrey; constable, Mr W. G. Sim ; plaintiff, Mr H. Godfrey. The jury were : Mesdames Aubin, Chambers, Messrs Benner, Aubin, Sim, McLeod and Russell.
