It was with feelings of regret that the scholars of the local school together with tsseir parents and friends assembled at the hall on Tuesday to bid farewell to Miss D. Phipps, who has held the position of assistant teacher at the local school, and who has been transferred to the Ellers.lie school. From a social standpoint the function was an enjoyable one, although it was quite evident that Miss Phipps’ departure from this district was deeply regretted by one and all. The hall was prettily decorated with ferns and flowers, the work of the children, who had determined to do their share towards according a fitting send-off to Miss Phipps. The ladies provided a dainty afternoon tea, which was much appreciated. Master Scott Macky, on behalf of his fellow scholars, read an address, whilst Miss Hazel Macky, one of the smaller pupils, handed to Miss Phipps a gold watch on behalf of the pupils. The children then sang “For She’s a Jolly Good Fellow ” in Maori. Miss Phipps suitably acknowledged the gift, and expressed regret at leaving her pupils, of whom she was justly proud. .Mr H. Webb, chairman of school committee, on behalf of the parents expressed regret at Miss Phipps’ departure. Whilst this was regretted one and all congratulated her upon the wellmerited promotion brought about by the transfer, which it was hoped was but the stepping stone to further advancement.
During the afternoon several songs by the children were sung, and when the party ultimately dispersed one and all left with pleasant recollections of an enjoyable outing and with sincere wishes to Miss Phipps.
