LOCAL AND GENERAL.

A receiving agency of the Bank of New Zealand will be opened every Thursday as from Thursday next, in temporary premises at the Kihikihi town ha 1 1.

A good game of hockey should be witnessed at Bockett's paddock to-morrow afternoon, when the two local teams, Rovers and Waratahs, meet in the second round for the Cup. At Friday's meeting of the Cambridge Borough Council it was decided to support the action of the Te Awamutu Chamber of Commerce in regard to urging on the Government the necessity of improving approaches to level crossings.

We remind our readers of the Te Awamutu Tennis Club's euchre party and dance, which takes place in the Town Hall tomorrow night. Prizes won by members last season will be presented during the evening. At a meeting of the Cambridge Chamber of Commerce it was decided to recommend the Borough Council and Leamington Town Board to consider the advisability of making inquiries with a view to securing electric power from Horahora, particularly in connection with the proposal of Hamilton to secure such power. At the Town Hall, Kihikihi, on Thursday evening Dr Florence Keller will deliver a lecture as advertised. This lecture is being arranged by the Kihikihi branch of the W.C.T.U., and Dr Keller, who is a member of the Aucklan I Hospital Board, is visiting th.: district at the request of this institution.

A notice appears in our advertising columns calling a meeting to arrange a farewell to Mr O. P. Owen, who is about to leave the district. Mr Owen has always been willing and ready to render assistance in any worthy public cause, and it is anticipated that the meeting will be large and representative of the district, and that a fitting expression of opinion will be the result. The petition recently presented to the chairman of the Town Board by Mr J. B. Teasdale who,-on-behalf of a number of ratepayers, urged that a poll be taken to determine whether the system of rating on unimproved values will be adopted at Te Awamutu hab been withdrawn. It is understood that the petitioners will again take action when the revised valuation rolls are received.

' At a meeting of the general committee of the Te Kuiti Cham- ! ber of Commerce, held on Friday ! night, a circular was read from J the Te Awamutu Chamber of J Commerce, pointing out the dai plorable loss of life at rail.vay crossings, and requesting the Chamber to pass a resolution and forward same to the Prime Minister. It was resolved that the resolution be passed and forwarned as requasted. At the meeting of the Town Bo:ird held on Thursday, the Chairman and Mr S. Mathews were [appointed a committee to inspect the various roads and streets throughout the town district with a view to obtaining the probable cost of metalling, to be met by a loan for the purpose. The Chairman and Mr W. Taylor referred to the importance of a town sewerage system, and it was resolved that the engineer be instructed to report on the probable cost with a view of raising a loan for the purpose. Teams from the followingplayers will be selected to play in the Cup match at Bockett's paddock on Saturday next:—Te Awamutu—A. Lang, E. Clarke, E. A.
