HAMILTON V. TE A WAMUTU

A team from the Hamilton Wanderers' Club visited Te Awamutu on Saturday afternoon, and tried conclusions with the local team. The visitors, showing better combination, succeeded in defeating their opponents by 5 goals to I. Play had not been in progress five minutes when J. Allen shot the first goal for Hamilton. Greenside tben took the ball to the visitors' territory. By good passing between Jackson, Keid and Allen, the home territory was again invaded, the ball beingkicked behind the line. , A temporary stoppage was made owing to Ciarke receiving a kick over the left eye. Betteridge and Clarke by good play took the ball to Hamilton's end of the field, where Greenside had a long shot, but the defence of the visitors was sound. Keid, from a pass by Jackson, shot Hamilton's second goal after a good passing rush. The visitors were not to be denied, however, and J. Allen again beat the goal-keeper. From the kick out Jackson centred, and Teddy was called upon to defend his goal. Norden and Fletcher took the ball to the visitors' goal, when the former made a good but unsuccessful shot, the ball going just outside the post. Just before half time was called, Bickerstaff, from a pass by Greenside, essayed a shot at goal, the ball going outside. The spell ended in favour of the visitors.

On resuming, the home team had a busy time defending their l goal, Bickerstaff bringing relief J by a good dribble to half way. i The home team now took a turn i at attacking, but bad direction i lost them several chances. Betteridge had a free kick in ; front ot the goal but made a poor i shot. The home team continued : to attack, Greenside and Clarke .being conspicuous. The defence of Bauckam, the visitor's goalkeeper, was good, and play was shifted to the centre of the field.. From a rally in front of Hamilton's goal, the-ball was passed to Bickerstaff, and he missed a splendid chance. He, however, gave a pass to Fletcher shortly after, and the latter beat the goalkeeper, scoring Te Awamutu's first and only goal. Hamilton, by a good forward rush, added a further goal to their score. Just before call of time, the visitors shot a goal, and the game ended, Hamilton 5, Te Awamutu I. Mr Cook was referee and gave satisfaction. The visitors were superior in all departments of the game, their passing being very accurate and well-timed. Clarke, Betteridge, and Greenside played well for the home team. The latter, however, was inclined to monopolise ; the talking. ' After the match the Hamilton team were entertained at tea. Mr McKinnon, captain of the visitors, thanked the members of the Te Awamutu club for their enjoyable visit. Mr T. There was a large attendance I at the race course on Saturday I afternoon to witness the first I game of the second round of the senior Rugbv football competition. Weather and ground conditions were ideal for football and the play was very fast and interesting. Te Awamutu won the toss and defended the western goal. D. Thomson kicked off for Kihikihi and very soon play was taken into Kihikihi's 25. From a throw in Kihikihi made things very willing. ; From a penalty Long (Kihikihi) had a kick at goal, but failed, and some brilliant play took place by D. Kay. From a scrum near the visitors' goal Briscoe I made a splendid drop kick at goal, but Black and Richardson then dribbled the ball right up the field into the home team's 25. Clifford took a mark, but Gus. Maunder failed to find the goal, here Clarke showed some brilliant play, which ended in Black crossing the line. Matthews did not add to the score. Matthews I kicked up the field and then C. : I Sutherland and L. Kay found the I j line with some splendid kicking.' > 1 From a scrum next the goal,

soon Clifford crossed the line. Brown converted and the score stood, Te Awamutu 3, Kihikihi 5. Both teams now were showing brilliant form, and Long had a kick for Kihikihi, but the ball hit the goal post. No other score resulted, and the game finished, Te Awamutu 3, Kihikihi 5- ll is J very difficult to individualise the I players, every one on the field i playing well. For Te Awamutu, 1 Teddy, Hinton, Reynolds, AlexI under, Clarke, Matthews, Lang, : Richardson, and Black, showed j brilliant form, and for Kihikihi I Kay (2), Long, Sutherland, ClifI ford, Thomson, Anderson, HenI clcrson, and Moody.

The game was controlled by ■ Mr Jarrade with strict impartial- | ity. The visiting team were. j entertained at dinner in the evenI ing at the Alpha Hotel.
