TE AWAMUTU CLUB.
According to notice appearing in the advertising columns of recent issues of this paper a public meeting was held in the Cosmopolitan club room on Saturday afternoon. About thirty farmers and townsmen were present, whilst a number of apologies for non - attendance were received. The proceedings
throughout were very enthusiastic, and there was a very >evident desire to bring to a satisfactory conclusion negotiations for the establishment of the club. Dr Reekie was voted to the chair and Mr A. Young elected provisional secretary. On behalf of the conveners Dr Reekie explained the purpose for which the meeting had been called. It was considered that the time had arrived for the establishment of a Farmers' and Commercial Men's Club at Te Awamutu, and they were there for the purpose of deciding what action should be taken in the formation of the proposed club. The advantages of such an institution were recognised by all, and he was of the opinion that immediate steps should be taken to bring about its establishment. Mr Innes-Jones expressed the opinion that the club was a muchfelt want at Te Awamutu, and ,assured the meeting of his support being given the proposal A club would serve the dual purpose of a convenience to farmer and townsman alike. It was in the interests of the farmer, the townsman and the district that some steps be taken to carry the proposal to a successful issue. Messrs Elliott, Teasdale, F. Potts, Bray, Stewart, Seward, Walker, Quin, Luxford and Empson spoke in a like manner, and after various financial and other . matters had been considered, the following resolution, on the motion of Mr Luxford, was unanimously adopted. "That a club be established in Te Awamutu, such club to be duly incorporated under the Incorporated Societies Act 1908, and that this meeting appoint a provisional committee to ascertain what membership is likely to be enrolled, consider the acquirement of suitable premises and other necessary preliminaries and to report to a subsequent meeting." It was suggested that the Club »~may possibly be able to arrange with the Te Awamutu Young Men's Institute for the tenancy of a suite of rooms in the premises about to be erected by the Institute. This suggestion was discussed at length but no action was taken pending the report of the provisional committee. The general feeling of the meeting was that the club should acquire its own freehold premises. The following were elected to this committee :Dr Reekie
(chairman), A. Young (secretary), "ji~ Gal. Ryder, Messrs Death, Quin, / Bray, Morrison, Stewart, Teasdale, Ahier, Innes-Jones, J. S. Phillips, W. Kay, Luxford, E. Potts, Elliott, Walker and
Seward. It was resolved that the annual i, subscription be two guineas for town members, and one guinea for country members. A radius of three miles from the Te Awamutu post office was determined upon as being the boundary for town members. It was resolved that enrolment forms be supplied to each member of the provisional committee, who will canvass the town and district for membership. The meeting was adjourned until Saturday, June 28th.
