TO THE EDITOR. SIR, —I noticed in your issue of 3rd. instant an interesting letter re the electric lighting of Te Awamutu. lam pleased to say that I am prepared to substantiate ‘Travellers' statements. There are perhaps one or two things that he did not mention that might enlighten the ratepayers of this district. The first is the great question of insurance, the great safety of electricity as a source of light, heat, and power will considerably reduce all insurance rates. Then there is the installation, all electric mains, besides being insulated with the regulation materials are now carried in metal tubes to the various points. These tubes lead to the various rooms from a central meter, switch and fuse board, which is situated in a convenient position. All fuses are on this board and are very accessible instead of being in the ceiling roses and switches as in the old method of wiring. The wires from the supply are carried directly to the building, and there is no expensive laying of gas mains into houses at a distance from the road. The new metallic filament lamps have now superseded the old carbon filament, giving twice the light with a reduction of 75 per cent, in the consumption of current. There are many other improvements and inventions in electrical appliances which will be dealt with later. —I am, etc., Observer.
