HOCKEY.

OPENING DAY

LADIES’ MATCH

TE AWAMUTU (i) V. PATERANGI (0).

The opening of the ladies’ hockey season took place on Wednesday afternoon in Bockett’s paddock, when a team of ladies from Paterangi visited Te Awamutu to try conclusions with the local players. After a stub-bornly-contested game Te Awamutu won by one goal to nil. Considering this was the first game of the season some good form was shown, and the play at times was exciting. During the first spell the home team had by far the best of the game, and, but for the splendid goal-keeping of Miss McCallum, the score against the visitors would have been increased. Miss F. Rickit scored for Te Awamutu, this being the only score during the game, .The Paterangi girls put more lite into their play during the second half, and went near scaring on several occasions.

MEN’S MATCH. PATERANGI (3) V. TE AWAMUTU (i). A hockey match between the above teams was played at Bockett’s paddock on Wednesday afternoon, and, after a very exciting and even gam •, resulted in a win for Paterangi by 3 goals to I. Paterangi played the better game, their hitting and combination being superior to that of the local players. K. Johnstone (captain of the Paterangi team) played with great judgment, and he was ably seconded by the Sing brothers. Paterangi’s score, which consisted of three goals, two were scored in the first spell, Allan Sing being responsible for the first, and S. Jephson tor the second, after a good passing rush, while Weal scored early in the second spell. L. North scored for Te Awamutu.

Judging by the way the Paterangi team played on Wednesday, it is evident that they have greatly improved since their last visit to Te Awamutu. It is apparently their intention to win the Cup, and if they continue to improve as they have done in the past, there is every prospect of their doing so.

At the conclusion of the ladies’ match a game took place between the men and ladies. The former were in fancy dress and were allowed to-use only one hand while playing. This game proved very amusing, and the dresses of some of the players defied description. Afternoon tea was served by the ladies, and was greatly appreciated by all.
