TENNIS.

A committee meeting of the local tennis club was held on Saturday evening in the Cosmopolitan club room. Present: Messrs Cruickshank (chairman), Johns, North, and Gabriel (honorary secretary). j Mr Godfrey was elected a mem- ! her of the club. Mr Gabriel reported that as he j was leaving the district for Roto- | rua he begged to tender his j resignation as secretary. Mr j Johns prodosed that his resignaj lion be accepted with regret, and I that a record be made of the ! club’s appreciation of the capable I manner in which he had carried | out his many and arduous duties. ' The position as secretary to the ; tennis club was no sinecure, and | Mr Gabriel, who was assisted in ! no small measure by Mrs Gabriel, | had spared no lime nor pains in ! making the season a successful

j one. The motion was carried j with acclamation, the committee wishing him success in his new sphere of life. Mr W. Johns was elected secretar)', and a vote of thanks to the chair and to Mr Spears for use of his room terminated the | meeting.

In the Men’s Championship Johns beat Cran 7 —5 ; 6 —I, In the Ladies’ Handicap singles Miss McGovern beat Mrs Henderson by default. In the final Miss Irvine-' beat Miss K. McGovern 50.—36. In the semi-final (Wood’s trophy) Miss McDonald beat Mrs Amor 50—33In the Men’s Handicap Singles (semi-final) North beat Johns, 70 —6l.
