WHITE CLOVER.
PRICE—£I6O PER TON. The farmer must have white clover seed for his mixtures, and as things stand to-day he must pay a fancy price for it. The value of first-grade seed at present is £l6O per ton, whereas the average price is something like £7O to £BS. Probably at no stage of New Zealand farming has £l6O per ton been exceeded. The new English crop is due in May, and if this is heavy the piice of the seed may decline, but if the English season is a bad one the price will naturally rise even higher than it stands to-day. Considering the demand there always is for white clover, it is surprising that New Zealand growers have not essayed growing the seed on commercial lines. In the opinion of a North Island farmer, who has just returned from the South Island, there are hundreds of acres of land in Canterbury which would grow excel lent clover seed. During his tour, the farmer in question states that he saw excellent white clover in plenty, but harvesting it was out of the question, because of the fact that it was growing amongst tussocks. While the price of white clover has advanced, another imported seed —timothy—has receded from £BS per ton (last year) to from £32 to £35 per ton. *
