DISTRICT NEWS.

PIRONGIA. (Own Correspondent). The Pirongia annual school picnic was held on Mr H. O. Death’s Riverview P'arm last Friday and was a great success. Although the weatherlooked anything but inviting early in the morning, by 10.30 there was a good crowd gathered, and by lunch time the weather was glorious. After lunch the races were started and kept up till after 4 p.m. Side games were also indulged in. The races were well patronised, big fields and close finishes being the result, and the judges, Messrs Beet, Low and Steele, had a trying time. During afternoon tea Mr Steele presented the prizes, and then called for three cheers for the ladies who had worked so hard, -and another three cheers for Mr Death for the use of his paddock, waggon , and team, which were given right .heartily. In the evening a most enjoyable dance was held, the floor having been very kindly got ready by Mr A. Westbury. The first two dances' were for the children and were very well patronised. On their conclusion the adults took their places* about thirty couples gracing the floor. At 10.30 most excellent refreshments were handed round. Dancing was kept up till after 2 a.m.. The music was supplied by Mrs McCarthy, Misses Aubin, and McLeod, and Messrs Jones, Sim, and Grant. Special praise must be given to Miss McLeod, who was tireless in her efforts. Mr W. G. Sim made a very efficient M.C., and still another one who must not be forgotten is Mr J. Russell, who was in charge of the boilers and supplied most delicious tea and coffee. Altogether the committee must feel proud of the way in which everything went, as there was not the slightest hitch from start to finish. The expenses for the dav amounted to almost £lO, and as over £ll had. been collected it leaves a balance for next year.
