LOCAL AND GENERAL.

The new Bank of New Zealand premises at Morrinsville were opened for business on Friday. Tenders to close on 22nd inst., are invited 'by; Mr J." W. Warren (architect) for the erection of an Enclosure (partlv in brick with cast iron railing), at the church of England cemetry. •■■■•'■'!

At the Chamber of Commerce meeting this evening the secretary will report on'* several matters of local importance resultant upon his visit to Wellington and interviews'with tlWj heads of Departments. ''■)*'..-, Residents of the Kawa district will be glad to learn that a tender for the erection of; the bridge over the Waipa riv:er has been accepted by the Wastomo County Council, and approved by the Public Works Department. Messrs Scott and Foi\syth are the successful tenders the work/ and the timber is ialready on order. . " ( Another terror is tol be added to the family man, nanoely, an increase in the cost of btbot repairing. This is stated to \be imperative on account of the \continued advance in the price cpf leather the higher rents, and,' increased cost of living. A strong association has been formeid by the boot repairers in Auckland, and as the outcome an altered price list has been arranged, to\ come

into force from Monday, the iotli day of February, 1913. We\have decided not to rise our repair prices. A. C. Tremain, Te AvWamutu.* \ We have arranged with thv? agricultural department to dis-N tribute as insets in this paper a leaflet concerning the spraying of fruit trees. The leaflet describes the more common diseases, the ingredients of the various mixtures and the method of spraying and should be most valuable for those engaged in orchard work, either for commercial purposes or as a hobby. The various treatments are not the cranky opinions of a few Departmental officers —they are the results of continuous experiments, and are particularly adaptable to New Zealand conditions. The leaflet will be sen' out at an early date.

Judging by the number of letters we have received for publication with reference to ragwort and other noxious weeds which appear to be growing so luxuriantly in one or two localities near by, it would seem that it is time very stringent endeavours were taken to rid the land, not only of the noxious weeds, but of the owners who wantonly permit their growth. We can only say—as we have said formerly —that it is a blot on the good name of land owners if there are some in their midst who are so indifferent to the Dominion's future, as to need compulsion to induce them to rid their lands of these dread pests. That the finances of the country should have to be taxed in order to provide a horde of inspectors to conduct prosecutions is little short of criminal. We hope that oersistent cases of wilful neglect will be brought under the notice of the Department so that the offenders niay speedily be brought to book.
