DAIRYING IN WESTLAND.
SHORTAGE OF LABOUR. Reports from the West Coast state that all over Westland the dairying industry is making marked progress. There are now four dairy factories in Westland, the latest being at Kumara, and it is estimated that the settlers supplying the factories will draw something like £22,000 for supplies this season. At the present time, it is stated, settlers are working from sunrise to sunset, and find it almost impossible to obtain assistance. The Westland dairying industry is in its infancy, and its progress is being considerably retarded by the scarcity of labour and the slow rate at which the land is being cleared. In most cases the assistance of a healthy youth would lighten the burden, but men and boys are not procurable. As a result the settlers are literally slaving during the milking season, the output is being considerably restricted, and development very much retarded. Close upon a hundred farm labourers could, it is reported, be placed in Westland immediately.
