TE AWAMUTU ATHLETIC AND CYCLING CLUB.
A general meeting of the above club was held in the Cosmopolitan Club room last night, about a dozen members being present. The chair was taken bv Mr Bray.
Minutes.
The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. Proposed Affiliation with N.Z. Athletic and Cycling Union. Mr Trinnear, of Te Kuiti, acting as the representative of the Auckland centre of the New Zealand Athletic and Cycling Union explained to the meeting the advantages that would accrue to the, club from affilialion with the union. It was not a case of making the club a professional one, but simply making it possible to have cash running. The union had been incorporated by Act of Parliament ten years ago, and controlled- practically every cycling event in New Zealand. It comprised Australia as well as New Zealand, there were sixty-three affiliated clubs in the Auckland centre alone. Its object was to regulate, control, and up-lift sport. It was not necessary for the winners to take cash prizes if they did not wish to, a trophy could always be asked for in place of cash. Practically speaking no club had fun a meeting under the union at a loss, and he could that if they decided to join the union they would never have cause to regret doing so. Appeal could be made to the centre in all disputes arising out of a meeting, and they might be assured of prompt'attention, and a satisfactory settlement of the matter in question. Mr Vile mentioned that he had just left a district where he had had every opportunity of seeing the advantages of affiliation with the Union, and had been a member for many years of a club so affiliated.
Mr Heerdegen stated that it was not a case of amateur v. professional, but of a sports meeting or no sports meeting. He was' satisfied that unless they affiliated with the Union it would not be possible to hold a meeting in Te Awamutu. He moved in the terms of the resolution previously published that this club affiliate with the New Zealand Athletic ■ and Cycling Union.
The resolution was seconded by Mr Spinley and carried unanimously. The following officers were appointed : —Secretary, Mr Phil Peate ; treasurer, Mr A. G. Warburton ; additional members of committee, Messrs Heerdegen and Vile. »
Date of Meeting. It was resolved that a sports meeting be held on the first Wednesday in March.
Bank Account
It was resolved that the secretary and treasurer open an account with the Bank of New Zealand in the name of the Te Awamutn Athletic and Cycling Club, and be authorised to operate on same. Thanks. Mr Le Sueur proposed a hearty vote of thanks to Mr Trinnear for so kindly coming to the meeting and explaining matters to them, and the resolution was carried with acclamation.
In replying, Mr Trinnear stated that it was sufficient recompense to him to know that the club had decided to affiliate with the Union. He would be very happy to forward a trophy for their first meeting. • A hearty vote of thanks to the chair then closed the meeting.
