THE COCKSFOOT HARVEST.
NOTES FROM AKAROA. Reports from Akaroa state that reaping was commenced in earnest on the lower cocksfoot paddocks on the Peninsula last week. A start was made in Little River, Robinson’s Bay, Pigeon Bay, and elsewhere, while work on the crop along the roadside was also commenced. The season has been even and the crops have grown uniformly, so that there have not been two or three growths as has been the case in late seasons. A number of men coming down from the North Island were delayed through the ferry service suspension. There were plenty of men at Little River, and on Tuesday no fewer than eighty went for dinner to one of the Little River boardinghouses. In the neighbourhood of Akaroa cutting was fairly general on Thursday morning, some seed being down on Tuesday. Growers anticipate the rain will cause the seed to ripen very fast, and are nervous of some of the crop shaking. The rain will be of great benefit to the latter crops on the tops of the hills, as the heat had dried them up somewhat on the rocky points.
